I waited for the cub to unlock its jaw and eat her whole before I could burn my way through the barrier to save her.
The cubs were often ravenous and they traveled in packs. The mother was actually less dangerous than her offspring and would eat what remains they left behind—if there were any.
The other two cubs at her feet sniffed her ankles, but they didn’t chew off her legs with a single bite like they normally would have.
I lessened the heat running through my fingertips.
They weren’t… eating her.
What the fuck is going on?
BONNY
I wasn’tsure what had come over me, but the little floofy unicorn bears absolutely required coddling.
And kisses.
And snuggles.
I made sure to give all of the above to each little cub. Their golden horns were blunted on the ends, so I was able to nuzzle them without fear of being pricked.
Raze continued to freak the fuck out behind me, although I really didn’t get what his problem was. Maybe you didn’t mess with cubs in the human world, but that was because mama bears tended to be murderously protective.
This mama bear… she hadspokento me.
We’ve been waiting for you,she said. Her growly voice rolled through my mind, but I liked how it felt.
Glancing up at her, I smiled as I scratched one of the cubs behind his ears. He playfully swiped his tiny paws at me, then harmlessly gnawed on my knuckles.
The emotions continually wafting from Raze shot through me like an arrow when the cub did that.
Fucking dongbells and poisoned Skittles. How pathetic does he think I am that a little baby cub’s love nip is going to hurt me?
Although for the level of panic I felt from him, I wondered why he hadn’t approached by now.
Irritated at him for being such a downer, I ignored the instinct to face him and smiled at Mama Bear instead. “Is that so?”
She rolled on her back, showing her belly again.Yes. You will save us.
“Save you? From what?”
“Um, Bonny?” Angel asked as she approached from behind. She rested a hand on my shoulder, knelt at my side, and then leaned in to whisper in my ear. “Are you talking to the Unicorn Bear?”
Right. Talking to the animals was probably some sort of side-effect of my awakening, so Angel wouldn’t be able to hear the bear’s side of the conversation.
“Yes,” I whispered back, “and it just got interesting.”
Angel quieted, which I took as permission to let me continue. Finally.
“Guys?” Ned said, making me growl.
I was grateful for my friends who were willing to walk through fire for me, but they needed to let me do this uninterrupted.
“Not now!” I hissed, then waved for the animal to continue. “You were saying, Mama Bear?”
I expected you to know who you were, she said, her tone almost sad. She sniffed the air, directing her attention to the male behind us.You brought one of your Vestals.
“Vestals?” I asked.
