Just a few hours ago I’d been human. Miserable, sure, but in a normal “life sucks, I’m going to be a rebel and smoke weed” kind of way.

Now?

I wasn’t even sure what I was.

I had no idea if I’d ever see my mother again, which I thought I would have been happy about, but at least she was the enemy I knew.

Here, I had no idea who I could trust.

With how I reacted to these males, I felt I couldn’t even trust myself.

“Totally fine,” I lied, avoiding eye contact as Ned and I managed to lift Raze between us.

We slowly made our way through the open gates. The Unicorns escorted us on all sides and boxed us in, not that we had anywhere to go.

The place was enormous, as was the magical bubble that kept dangerous beasts out and us inside.

Eli closely followed us but seemed to anxious about the situation to help. At least with Ned’s assistance, I was better able to manage Raze’s weight. He was definitely a lot heavier than he looked.

My energy drained with every step and it felt like an eternity before we’d wound through the streets to where it was less crowded.

Males all stared at us—particularly at Angel and myself—with curious and startled looks.

It was obvious that they didn’t see females very often, especially ones with golden horns.

Master Nox must have been in charge of this place because they all looked to him for leadership. He gave the Unicorns subtle nods of reassurance.

If he said anything to them, it must have been telepathically, because I didn’t hear him speak. After a lifetime of growing up with witches and other supernaturals, I'd learned that just because they weren’t talking didn’t mean they weren’tcommunicating.

Whenever he made eye contact, I sensed a wave of reassurance through the air. It felt different than a hunch, or a suspicion that there was something else going on that I couldn’t see or hear in the traditional sense.

I couldfeelit.

My skin tingled and my horn hummed in response, as if it wished to resonate with the nearby use of magic.

Of course, there was magic everywhere here. It permeated the air and sank into my skin, making my heart beat faster in response.

It helped the sensation of needles that came from the dark poison digging deeper in my veins, but now my chest was starting to hurt.

My lungs constricted, threatening my ability to breathe.

I hid my condition from the others as best as I could. If the Unicorns thought I was about to keel over from this Corruption stuff, they might not allow me to stay.

Which meant I wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on Raze.

And for some reason, I cared about that.

When we entered one of the buildings, I knew we were almost there, anyway. I wouldn’t have to keep up the façade much longer.

“You’ll watch over them,” Master Nox instructed the male with bi-colored eyes.

The male glanced at me, then back to Nox. “If that is supposed to be a punishment, brother, it’s not. I’ll gladly stay and make sure our guestsare comfortable.”

“I’m pretty tired,” I grumbled as I wilted under Raze’s weight. “Can you show me where I can treat him?”

While I was exhausted, something inside of me couldn’t let Raze die. We were connected, somehow, and I needed to understand why that was.

No, that wasn’t the full truth. I didn’t want to just keep him alive for answers.
