I wouldn’t expect much from the Soldiers, but I had hopes for Shadow.

Peering at him, I wondered why he hadn’t joined the fray.

He kept on the edge of our skirmish. He would work better at night, but that only meant he had to take his time deciding on his plan of attack.

He particularly watched when the alpha evaded Dash, and then how he moved toward Vern, keeping one eye on the Valiance wolf who would be a more unpredictable fighter.

I watched them like Shadow did with a careful eye, then I saw the patterns emerge.

Ah,I realized.He’s evaluating the alpha’s fight pattern.

Which, right now, seemed to be to annoy the fuck out of us by evading every single attack.

Leaving Shadow to his observations, I joined Dash and Vern to try and corner the damned alpha.

He might be fast, but he couldn’t outmaneuver all three of us if we worked together.

The problem was that none of us would allow the others to take the lead. When I’d worked with wolves in my pack, an established hierarchy would determine any battle tactics.

Dash barreled into me when he should have moved out of the way. I growled and gave him a punch in the ribs he’d remember.

He snarled back, but returned to his side of the fighting circle.

Vern seemed to completely ignore us. His attack from behind hadn’t worked so he went for a direct approach.

He was getting closer. The alpha vanished, but Vern was a few steps closer to where he reappeared than the last time. He swiped with his claws, narrowly missing the alpha’s chest.

He had to lean at an angle in order to avoid Vern’s next swipe, which left him open for me.

I took the opportunity and lunged.

“Stop,” Shadow said, holding up one clawed hand.

Normally I wouldn’t take orders from anyone, but Shadow was the alpha of the Midnight Pack.

He would see things that I couldn’t.

Obeying, I twisted and forced my momentum to divert. A blast of ice-cold heat rushed past my head.

Had I not swerved, it would have knocked me out cold.

The white-hair alpha frowned.

A momentary setback, his gaze seemed to say.

The level of cockiness from this alpha made me livid.

“What kind of cowardly move is that?” I roared, ignoring all sense of self-preservation as I stormed toward the alpha. “You use Moon Magic instead of fighting me like a real wolf?”

He grunted and allowed me to slam my chest against his.

Despite my exceptional height even among alphas, this male still had a few inches on me.

That only pissed me off more.

I went to strike him, but my fist hit a silvery shield.

He was untouchable… for now.
