He glowered down his nose at me. “Iamthe alpha of the Moon Pack.”
“Outcast,” Shadow corrected with a sneer. The dark-haired shifter paced from a distance as Vern and Dash crowded him from behind.
The Outcast didn’t make any move to blur away again, which suggested he thought we weren’t a challenge.
Or hecouldn’tafter that little light show.
“Coward,” I amended, shoving a finger against his chest. However, I couldn’t penetrate the shield that hovered just over his skin. “That’s all this shifter is.”
He tilted his head, giving me a predatory-like stare. “Is it cowardly to shift? That comes from Moon Magic as well.” He grinned. “I know that your packs lack education, but surely even you know that much.”
Vern trailed a claw over the shield as he tested it. “If you’re not a coward, then why do you hide behind magic that a blasphemous human gave you?”
The alpha chuckled, making us all snarl. “Human? Can’t you feel her shifting even now?” His moonlit eyes gazed upward before fluttering closed. “Her wolf is awakening after a long slumber.” He opened his eyes again, this time meeting my gaze as he ran his tongue over his lower lip. “And I will make sure she has everything she needs.”
Then he sucked his lip between his teeth as if savoring something.
My heart stuttered.
Right… he could still taste her on his lips.
The fucking asshole was going to regret taunting me like that.
Unable to stop myself, I moved to wrap my fingers around his throat, but the shield held. I roared and backed away.
He grinned. “Does it anger you that I knew what she was? That I immediately accepted her? That Iwaitedfor her?” He waved open his arms, showing off the silvery marks. “She’s the Moon Guardian… or should I assume that you don’t know her title?”
I frowned, then glanced at Vern.
My pack was the most religious of them all, giving our complete dedication to the Moon Goddess.
Yet I hadn’t heard of a Moon Guardian before.
It didn’t mean that a legend didn’t exist.
Vern’s pack served Her in no less capacity. And as a Valiance Alpha, that gave him wisdom that I wouldn’t have access to.
Theeducationthat this alpha ridiculed us for lacking was now Vern’s responsibility. Even if he hadn’t been prepared for the role, I hoped that he would know of such legends.
Because sometimes… legends became reality.
Vern frowned, then his eyes went wide with surprise.
“Fuck. I can’t believe I’d forgotten that story.”
Our conversation was interrupted when a distinct sound of hundreds of daggers leaving their scabbards rang over the cracked landscape.
We all shot our gazes north.
The Hunters were on the move.
And our alpha battle was going to have to wait.
As much as I wanted the alpha’s blood… we were going to need his blasphemous powers to survive legends come to life.
