I managed to open my eyes only to see a massive cave yawning open. Rock formations made it look like it had a giant maw and it was going to swallow us whole.

I wasn’t the only one who thought it looked like a creature. Diamonds had been dug into the sides of the mountain, giving it eyes.

It was supposed to be a wolf, I realized, when we stepped through the long length of its snout to venture inside.

Well, stumbled, rather, right before I fell flat on my face.

“Nina!” Althea shrieked.

“Sorry!” she replied.

Strong hands grabbed me—they must have been Althea’s—and she dragged me inside with a sense of urgency.

Even though she’d promised me that I wouldn’t die, what was she so afraid of?

And where the fuck were we going? I wasn’t sure what a creepy-ass wolf cave was going to do for me.

“Ggggggg-oddess,” I growled. She lived within me now. Perhaps if I prayed to her, she’d release me from this agony.

Another wave of violence rushed through me.

My alphas… they were fighting.

Not each other… but Kane.

His quiet determination was like the eye of a storm. It didn’t matter if chaos swarmed all around him; he would be forever untouchable.

Except, he was afraid—not of the alphas, but of something else that threatened my life.

I blinked a few times as we ventured into the darkness. My vision kept changing. Sometimes I could see the rocks at my feet, and sometimes I couldn’t see anything at all.

My shift wasn’t just slow. It kept regressing back to human as if my soul rejected this.

Rejected… her.

Let her in,Kane said, his voice infiltrating my mind.

I jolted at the silky sound of his voice.

Let who in?I asked. It was much easier to talk inside my head than try to work my useless throat.

Your wolf.

WOLF KAITSJA

Let.

Me.

In.

Begging wasn’t in my nature.

But I was finally awake.

After an entire existence in slumber.

And I’m not fucking going back.
