Ugh…
My entire body ached, but at the same time I felt… good.
So warm and cozy,I mused as I stretched.Am I wearing a coat?
But then I realized I was stretching… on all fours.
I definitely was warmed by a coat.
But one that was made of my own fur, not something I was wearing.
Flashing open my eyes, my vision took in the dark cave with a wolf’s eye.
Things were brighter, but selectively color-muted.
Then the scents hit me.
I flinched when I drew in a breath. It was bit shocking at first so I reduced my breath to short bursts, taking in each scent selectively.
Moisture.
Moon Blossoms.
Pine and Ember…
I turned, looking for the source of the last scents. Sniffing, I followed it until a restraint tugged me to a halt.
With a loud yip I fought against it. The cold metal around my throat hadn’t been noticeable before, but I had enough fur to keep myself warm from noticing it. My body heat had warmed it to some extent.
Which meant I’d been here for a while.
There should have been lingering scents from Nina and Althea, but I couldn’t smell anything other than a faint mixture of animalistic scents. Other wolves had passed through here, but I couldn’t distinguish them without more reference.
Either I wasn’t very good at these new wolf abilities, or they’d left a while ago.
How long have I been out?
“I’m glad you’re awake, Kaitjsa,” Kane said as he stepped into the dim light.
I hadn’t realized that the Moon Blossoms gave the caves a soft glow. With my wolf’s vision, I could easily make out his gorgeous form.
And his injuries.
Strange slashes marred his entire body, and one had nicked his beautiful face, leaving a mark near his eye.
He was the only alpha who hadn’t taken the ritualistic facial scar to prove his worth. He was different from the rest, which had me concerned what I’d missed while I’d been out.
Lunging for him, the restraint caught me again, and I remembered that I wasn’t supposed to feel affection for him.
He’d done this to me.
And… where was my wolf?
I was in her form… but I couldn’t hear her voice.
Kane approached and reached out a hand to touch me, but I instinctively snarled and snapped.
He curled his fingers into a fist and knelt on one knee. “I understand that I have some explaining to do, Kaitsja, but you’re going to have to trust me.”
