Some had Hunter blood.

Which might explain why the Hunters had come after us—but it didn’t explain why they’d tried to kill the Outcast Alpha who stopped the Hunters from finishing the job.

Probably because he wanted the clout of killing us himself. Weakening us by using the Hunters was a cowardly move, and it had blown up in his face because they’d turned on him, too.

My jaw flexed with rage.

I was a Soldier. That gave me a sense of honor and loyalty that couldn’t be surpassed by any of the packs. The Goddess blessed my pack with enhanced strength and powerful senses in return for that loyalty.

But it hadn’t been enough to save me from becoming another alpha’s bitch.

“I’m going to kill that bastard,” Vern vowed as he slumped against the wall.

He had it worse than the rest of us. A gash ran down his chest and over his groin where the alpha had ripped through him like he was a piece of meat. I couldn’t see the full extent of it since they’d put pants on him, but blood had already soaked through the fabric, leaving a dark spot down his thigh.

It would have been fatal had that female wolf not patched him up when we’d been dragged in here.

“Not if I get to him first,” I growled, pulling against my chain again.

When I yanked, which was a move I immediately regretted. A zap traveled through my body and made my teeth clench with the resulting stab of pain.

“I told you not to try to move,” Shadow said as he slid another petal into his mouth.

“Don’t expect a Soldier to listen to common sense,” Vern said with an eye-roll.

None of them respected me.

I’d let them think I was dumber than an old oak tree, but the truth was that I worked best when I was underestimated.

Intelligence was yet another gift that the Goddess gave my pack, and that was a trait that we were smart enough to keep hidden.

Perhaps I’d been the only one to recognize that the Outcast Alpha was stronger than the four of us put together, but honor demanded that I fight him.

I’d also smelled our rejected mate on him… which meant that he wasn’t going to kill us. He would instead bring her to us.

My mouth salivated at that thought.

Goddess, I hope I’m right.

“Hmm,” Shadow agreed as he nibbled on another petal.

Ryker snarled. “Will you stop blaspheming the Goddess right in front of me?”

Shadow glared back, then purposefully ripped the last petal off and placed it on his tongue before slurping it up.

His wounds glowed silver, then flashed an inky black before partially healing.

I’d never seen a healing turn black before, but Shadowwasa member of the Midnight Pack. Maybe that meant they healed differently.

Vern sighed and closed his eyes. “I’d appreciate it if you two cut it out. I’m trying to heal the old fashioned way.”

Sleep allowed our wolves to emerge, often resulting in stronger healing abilities.

I had no fucking clue how anyone could sleep right now.

Shadow snorted, then turned to me. “What about you, Soldier? Are you going to make yourself vulnerable by napping in enemy territory, or are you going to eat that Moon Blossom right next to you?” He eyed the white flower hanging next to my head, then glanced at my wound.

The nasty wolf bite on my bicep ached, but it was the other injury that made it hard to breathe.
