Still, I wonder...how bad did it look?

I pull out my phone and search: Zara Morgan sleeping at football game.

I gasp.

The sheer number of clips is staggering. Apparently, I was caught sleepingbeforethe touchdown. And snoring.

Oh my God—I wassnoring.

I scroll from one video to the next.

And the next.

And the next.

“Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit,” I whisper.

This isn’t just bad. It’s catastrophic.

“I’m in trouble.”

Just then, the driver’s door opens.

I nearly drop my phone, shoving it into my purse so fast I fumble the zipper.

Jaxon slides in, not saying a word. In his hands are two large takeout cartons—burgers, fries, probably something greasy and amazing. The scent floods the car, warm and comforting and completely at odds with the panic still buzzing in my chest.

“I didn’t know what you liked,” he says, handing one box to me. “So I just got everything.”

“Thanks,” I say quietly, wishing I could crawl inside the box and disappear.

TWENTY-SIX

Iplugged my address into his GPS, and now we’re on the road. I can’t wait to get home.

Too bad I’m not hungry, because the food smells amazing. Rich, buttery, warm. But my stomach’s too knotted to touch it. Meanwhile, the burger disappears into Jaxon’s hand like it’s nothing more than a slider. I remind myself—he’s an athlete. Food is fuel. After a game like that, he needs it.

The dashboard lights up again. No ringtone this time—he must’ve silenced it. But the name flashing across the screen makes my eyes widen.

Tiffany with the nice ass.

Seriously?

I shake my head, disgust crawling under my skin.

“Hey, Tiff,” he answers, casual as anything, like she’s an old friend. His voice is light. Warm. Flirtatious.

His right arm grips the steering wheel like a wall between us.

“She was tired. She works hard,” he says. He doesn’t look my way, but I can feel the judgment rolling off him. “We’ll see.”

The way he sayswe’ll seemakes my chest clench.

“Tiff, good to hear from you…”

A pause. Then laughter. A kind I’ve never heard from him.

“Nah… Nah… Can’t do that anymore.”
