This was it. I didn’t think. I just acted.
Rushing forward, I caught up to him. When I had matched his stride, I pinched his arm.
“Ow.” He glanced in my direction.
I grabbed his ear and pulled it toward my mouth. “It’s me,” I whispered. “Meet me in the hall.” Then I darted away to safety.
His eyes went wide as he scanned left and right.
The guard beside him turned. “What did you say?”
“N-nothing. I think I dropped something.” He stopped walking with the group and began searching the floor. The guards flowed past him until he was the last one in the big empty room besides the Habermanns. Then, he carefully pushed one of the double doors and held it open as if he was looking for someone.
Noticing this, I flew forward and sailed out of the door, landing in the hallway.
“I’m going to go this way,” Vaughn said to no one in particular. He walked slowly down a hallway until he reached a small alcove with a fire extinguisher set into a case in the wall.
I flew in, fitting myself into the compact space. “Vaughn, it’s me.”
“Tally? How? Why can’t I see you?”
“Just listen. We found a magical fountain. Somehow it allowed me to be invisible. I’m the one who attacked Karen. I did it to get inside. To get you out.”
“Get me out? How?”
I bit my lip. “I thought maybe you’d have an idea.”
“Tally, I…” He shook his head, but then, his eyes darted up. “So no one can see you?”
“Nope. No one so far.”
“Then we need to hurry. Follow me.” He started to move out of the alcove, but I put my hand on his arm. “Vaughn, what are we doing?”
“No time to explain. Follow my lead.”
He rushed past me, and I flew behind him. I thought we’d head toward the lower level, but he pushed back into the cafeteria.
“Vaughn,” I whispered, but he was charging ahead.
“Sir, Ma’am, I need to speak with you. I have something important to tell you.”
Alexander and Adaline looked up from the heated conversation they were having. They stared in contempt at the guard who was rushing through the empty cafeteria toward them.
“What is it?” Alexander hissed. “Who are you, anyway?”
“This is Vaughn,” Adeline said with a smirk. “He’s one of the New Starts folk. Remember?”
“Who cares?” Alexander said. “What do you want?”
Vaughn kept hurrying up to them, stopping when he was only a few feet away. I flew up and landed beside him, my heart pounding. I followed his every move carefully, waiting, watching.
“I need to tell you something, but it’s classified. Can I come closer?”
Alexander looked disgusted, but Adaline seemed intrigued, she leaned forward, her blond hair brushing past her shoulders. “What is it, Vaughn?”
He leaned forward too, whispering. “It’s time we put a stop to you two. Tally, now!”
Then, he attacked.
