Vaughn didn’t seem phased, however. “I can think of a few ways a trusted guard could get outside, Adaline. Don’t you worry. Now, give us Arryn and Courtney’s location.” As he said this, he dug through the twin’s pockets and pulled out their cellphones and scan cards. Then, he reached around Adaline’s back and came away with her large ruby ring. I wondered what interest he had in that, but I didn’t ask.

“The locations. Now.” He growled, his green eyes flashing like they did before he shifted. He was menacing. I had to hand it to him.

“I’ll tell you,” Adaline offered, “but it won’t matter. There’s no way out. Better to surrender now. It’ll save you a lot of trouble. Trust me.”

“Trust you?” I laughed. “When have we ever been able to trust you?”

She stared up at me with large blue eyes. “Your aunt trusted us, Tally. Why is that, do you think?”

The mention of my aunt tightened something in my chest like a rope squeezing my rib cage. Why would my aunt work with these monsters? Did she know what they’d done to her son?

“My aunt hasn’t cared about me for a long time.”

Adaline shook her head. “Why do you think we gave you a second chance? Alexander wanted to flay you and leave your body for the crows. Why do you think you were able to roam free, even spend time with your beau?” She glanced at Vaughn, lifting an eyebrow.

I shook my head. “No… I…”

“It was because of Kiana. Even Sinasre’s transformation. She gave us the go-ahead. Once Alexander perfects him, he will be miraculous. A weapon of mass destruction as some might say. Kiana is looking forward to seeing her warrior son in action.”

The world was narrowing to a pinhole. Kiana gave them permission to dothatto Sinasre? That couldn’t be true, could it? She had been a cruel leader, but she had always put her family first, even to a fault. The thought of her approving of her son’s mutilation was too much to bear.

“It’s not true,” I murmured as Vaughn moved close. “It can’t be true.” Anger filled me, searing my insides and sending adrenaline pumping through every corner of my body. My hands fisted until my knuckles turned white.

“Tally, she’s just messing with you,” Vaughn whispered. “Don’t listen to her. Please. We need to get the girls. You gotta focus.”

I blinked hard and nodded. “The locations of Courtney and Arryn.” I strode forward, anger still roiling in my chest. I grabbed Adaline by the collar, hauling her up, as I pulled back my fist and aimed it at her perfect face.

She smirked. “You won’t—”

I hit her as hard as I could.

The crunch of my fist smashing into her nose was surprisingly loud inside the small refrigerator. Pain lanced through my hand as her horrified scream rent the air.

Adaline collapsed to the floor. “Oh, my God. You broke my nose!”

Blood poured from her nostrils as her hands went up to her perfect nose, now swelling and disfiguring, but I didn’t have time for sympathy. She had shown none to Daniella or Chan or Wally or Antonio or anyone else they’d killed or mutilated. I pulled my fist back, finding satisfaction in her fear while Vaughn turned his attention to Alexander, putting his hands around his neck and beginning to squeeze.

“Where are they?!” I shouted.

“West wing. Third floor. Suite 352,” Alexander answered, his eyes darting from his sister to us as if he finally saw us for what we were. What they’d made us.

I glanced at Vaughn. “Can you get us to Suite 352?”

He nodded, yet his face still registered the shock of my vicious attack. If I had time to think about it, I might be shocked too, but I didn’t. We had to save the girls and figure a way out of this place.

Vaughn ran to the refrigerator door and glanced out its small, round window. “No one yet. You should go invisible again.”

I closed my eyes and activated my glamour. “Can you see me?”

“No. Freaky. Okay, I need to act like you’re not here, but watch me closely, okay?”

“Okay,” I said, my heart pounding.

Behind us, Adaline’s voice was thick with blood as she spoke. “You’ll pay for this.”

I glanced at her one more time. “You humans believe in karma, so I’m sure if anyone will pay, it’s you two.”

Vaughn and I pushed out of the refrigerator and sealed the door shut. Then we ran out of the kitchen, through the cafeteria and out into the hallway.
