No. I couldn’t lose him. I dropped my head.
“What’s this?” a male voice said.
My head whirled up. Alonzo stood, staring down with a perplexed expression.
“Help him,” I said in a panic. “He’s dying.”
Alonzo’s eyes swam around, trying to find where my voice had come from. It was then I remembered I was invisible, and he’d found a dying wolf with his head propped up in the air.
I flicked into existence as fast as I could. “It’s Tally. This is Vaughn. They shot him. Please, can you help?”
Alonzo looked over his shoulder and called out, “Vinya, over here!”
Footsteps pounded my way. Then the young witch I’d seen earlier jogged up and stopped beside Alonzo. “Healing magic,” he said, gesturing to Vaughn. “Quickly.”
She nodded and began the strange movements that controlled even stranger spells. Vaughn’s breathing evened out, and his heartbeat grew stronger.
“Oh, thank the gods,” I said, ready to cry with relief. Swiping at tears, I realized I was spreading Vaughn’s blood on my face and body. It was everywhere. So much blood.
“Can your witch friend save him?” I asked Alonzo as I held onto Vaughn’s head.
“Vinya is good, but he is very hurt. We need to get him out of here. We need to get us all out of here.”
“And go where?” I asked.
Alonzo patted my shoulder. “You’ll see. Come on.”
Chapter Twenty-Seven
“We gotwhat we came for. We’re pulling out,” Alonzo called to his people, repeatedly signaling toward the exit by flicking his hand.
Those in his party started pulling out of the garage, rushing back outside in a blur of supernatural speed. I stayed put and held on to Vaughn, who seemed better thanks to Vinya’s healing spell, but he still wasn’t waking up. I shook him slightly.
Vaughn’s wolf form abruptly floated off the concrete floor. I panicked for a second until I realized Vinya was weaving her hands in his direction, levitating him.
“I’m going to levitate him out of here,” she said.
“Wait! I can’t leave.” I glanced frantically to where I’d left Arryn and Courtney.
“Anyone else out there?” Alonzo followed my gaze.
“Yes. Two girls.” I ran in their direction, but he stopped me.
“Where are they?” he asked.
“By the door.” I pointed and tried to extricate my arm from his grip. I couldn’t see them from where I stood, but I knew they had to be terrified.
He pressed a small, black device into his ear. It crackled with static and the voice of someone on the other end. He instructed someone to get the girls, but I couldn’t rely on anyone else. I fought to get free. “Let me go. I’ll get them.”
The device crackled again, and a female voice spoke through it. “I got them.”
“There they are!” Alonzo pointed toward a female figure dashing past the exit. The girls were with her, safe at least for now. My anxiety abated enough that I could focus on the task at hand. I wanted to run to them but realized there were bigger forces here at work. More guards were likely on their way.
“Stay close,” Vinya said, starting to run. “Under my cloaking spell.”
I didn’t tell her I could do my own cloaking spell and did as she said, not wanting to confuse things further. I was staying at Vaughn’s side until he opened his eyes and gave me one of his rare grins. Alonzo brought up the rear, staying under Vinya’s protection.
But, as we got close to the open garage doors, bullets once again began flying from the back of the garage. Reinforcements had arrived. I glanced back over my shoulder, fearing a bullet would strike someone.
