“Lucia!” I chided her, sounding just like Mom.

She rolled her eyes at me. “Seriously? You’re worried about my language?”

“I’m worried about more than your language, young lady!”

“Young lady? You’re only two years older than me.”

“Yeah, but in that time, I’ve lived way more than you have in your entire life.”

“Whatever. Tell yourself that. So do you still want me to help? Or not? Because I’m game. I promise you I can handle it. I know what to expect now. It won’t take me by surprise again.”

“I don’t know.” I rose to my feet. Everyone stared, waiting for an answer. “I don’t fucking know.”

Overwhelmed, I stomped out of there. Jake made as if to follow, but Rosalina shook her head. He frowned but stayed back.

In my bedroom, I crashed into bed and buried my face in the pillow. I wanted to scream but I managed to keep it to a groan.

If Lucia had fallen into the pentagram, she would’ve been possessed—or worse yet, dead. And I had done that. I had put her at risk. What was wrong with me?

Selfish. You’re so selfish. You take and you take and you take.

I pressed harder into the bed. “Swallow me, please.”

My bones and my consciousness felt heavy, leaden. Guilt was fucking heavy. My eyelids dropped, and the exhaustion from the past few days settled over me with a vengeance. There was no better escape than sleep.

Before I knew it, I was out.

CHAPTER 29

Rosalina’s gentle voicecalled my name. “Toni, wake up.” She tapped my shoulder.

I opened my eyes, blinking rapidly. When I caught sight of her, I sprang to a sitting position. “Shit, I fell asleep.” I hadn’t meant to. There was no time for sleep.

“Are you hungry?” she asked.

Not at all what I was worried about. I pushed my way out of bed. “How long did I sleep?”
