“No.” He closed the box and put it back on top of the pile. “They’re research material.”
I cocked my head to one side.
“For how to break an unbreakable pact.” He smiled sheepishly and gave a little shrug.
“Oh. I didn’t know you’d asked Eric for help.”
“He’s the only one I felt I could trust.”
My heart did a weird flip as I realized Eric was willing to help us.
“We can split them up,” he said.
I nodded, a stupid smile spreading over my lips. It was no time to smile, but it felt good to have hope.
Jake smiled back, then heaved a sigh. “Maybe we should leave. Whoever your Fae friend is, he won’t be happy if we come knocking on his door too late.” He was avoiding eye contact at any cost, embarrassed about our emotional exchange.
Inwardly, I was amused. He was such a macho man that one little tear was too much to give. Yet, it had been there. I had seen it, and if I’d used it in a potion to track his mate, it would have led straight to me in a matter of seconds.
This man was mine and no one else’s, and the hell if I was going to let anyone take him from me.
“All right,” I said, interlacing my fingers with his. “We are off to Elf-hame. Hold on to your panties.”
As I took my hand to the token at my neck, it felt like this was the beginning of more than just a trip to Elf-hame. Maybe, it was the beginning of a trip to a new life.
Chapter 20
Like the time I hadtraveled with Damien, all the color that surrounded us washed away, then were remade into a different scenery.
We rematerialized at the edge of the city, facing an ample forest of massive trees that made our realm’s trees pale in comparison. What we could see of the sky above was peppered with millions of stars and a pale crescent moon. Lightning bugs flitted over flowering bushes. It was so magical, I almost ached inside.
Jake stood in a slight crouch as if he expected someone to leap at us from the woods. His nose twitched, his eyes roved around, and his hand squeezed mine tightly.
First, I thought his attitude was silly, then I remembered what Damien had said about the many creatures that lived in Elf-hame’s forests. I had wanted to shift instead of riding a pony, but he warned me against it.
“That would be a bad idea. Your wolf stench would make the creatures around us feel threatened, and I can assure you it wouldn’t bode well for us.”
