I walked closer and read the title on the spine.Blood Treaties: My life in France by Alodar Rune, and under that, in very small letters,Pacte de Sang: Ma Vie en France. I’d seen the book when I first picked a few from the stacks, but I didn’t link the word treaty to pact, and I didn’t notice the French title either.
“What the...? Are you trying to tell me something?”
He glanced up, his eyes blank, his expression so purely feline that I felt like a total idiot grasping at straws. Of course, he wasn’t trying to tell me that I would find the answers I sought in this book. Of course, he wasn’t any sort of Skew cat.
Still, I picked up Blaze, set him on the coffee table, then collected the heavy volume.
“I might as well take a look at this one next,” I said. “It’s not like it makes any difference.”
I walked toward the sofa, leafing through the first few pages. I was about to sit down when my phone rang. I set the book down when I saw that it wasRosalina.
“Hey!” I said, frowning. It was rare for her to call this late. “Everything all right?”
“I’ve got good news. I checked the agency’s after-hour messages and guess what?”
“What?” I asked, my heart beating quickly, responding to the excitement in her voice.
“Mekare Graves called and said her assistant is coming by tomorrow morning with a signed contract and a vial of the best heartfelt tears she’s ever cried, and best of all, a check for the deposit! Fifteen thousand dollars, Toni. We live to fight another day.”
“Witchlights! Really?!”
“Yep!”
My knees almost buckled in relief. “I’ll get to work on her potion as soon as they deliver those tears.”
“We have all the ingredients we need. I triple-checked everything this morning. I’ll schedule time for the tracking trance to make sure nothing gets in the way.”
“I’m so relieved.” I needed to tell her about the deal I’d made with Kalyll. I would soon need to track Gonira, but this was the priority.
“Me, too. Make sure you get lots of rest now. You’ll have to do two trances soon. One for Mr. Taylor and one for Ms. Graves.”
I nodded as if she could see me. “Yeah, I can do that this weekend.”
“Like I said, rest.”
“Will do.”
Well, no more time to waste on useless book searches. Succeeding in tracking a mate for these two clients was as high on the priority list as Stephen’s payback. So I made sure I had an alarm set for 3:30 AM, brushed my teeth, and crawled into bed.
