Chapter 30

We sat in silence forseveral minutes. So much had happened, and I had no idea what to say. Without a word, he stood, picked up both our plates and washed them. I stared at his wide back and followed it down as it tapered into a narrow waist. Inevitably, my eyes fell to his butt and his tight, worn blue jeans. I liked a man who wasn’t shy about doing a few chores around the house. When we lived together, forever ago, he’d always helped around the apartment. I found it sexy as hell, especially when he went about it in nothing but his boxer briefs.

I tore my gaze away from him just in time to avoid being caught checking him out. I would’ve never heard the end of that one. Instead, he found me peering at my intertwined fingers.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked.

I shrugged. I couldn’t tell him I’d been thinking about his fine butt.

He made a sound in the back of his throat at my lack of answer, then walked to the living room area and proceeded to take the cushions off the sofa. Cautiously, he pulled the bed out. I jumped to my feet and moved a few pieces of furniture out of the way to make room for it.

“Thanks.”

The shower began running in the bathroom, which made me realize the oddness of the situation. If a few months ago someone had told me I would be in a log cabin with two alphas and my best friend, I wouldn’t have believed them.

“The sheets look pretty clean, don’t you think?” Jake asked, his head cocked to one side as he appraised his accommodations.

“I guess.”

They were badly creased and crumpled since the bed had been folded in place without removing them, but other than a bit dusty, they seemed fine.

“Oh, well.” Jake sat at the edge of the bed. “I’ve slept in worse places.” He rubbed his forehead and stared straight ahead.

I sat next to him, leaving several inches between us. “Are you doing all right? I mean, you never got to see your grandfather buried.” I frowned. “Do you think they... did it?”

“I’ve no idea. I should call tomorrow.”

I nodded uncertainly.What a clustermess.

“I can’t stop wondering about the dagger. Where did he put it?” He shook his head in frustration. “Why did he have to be so fucking ambitious?”

So Jake didn’t know where the dagger was. Hehadbeen bluffing in order to protect everyone at the funeral home.

“I’m sorry, Jake.” I reached for his hand and squeezed it.

We were quiet for a few beats, then he glanced in my direction, and caressed my cheek. “Thanks for being here.”

I smiled as if to saythat was nothing.

He leaned forward, his lips parting. As he was about to kiss me, Blaze squeezed himself in the narrow space between us. Jake pulled back and glowered at the cat.

“What?! Now, you’re going too far, bud,” Jake told him. “It’s like he’s jealous or something.”

I snickered and petted the top of Blaze’s head. “Maybe he is.”
