The Dark Donna was here, and she was definitelynoton our side.

Chapter 36

The air froze insidemy lungs, and breathing became impossible. Whatever hope I’d harbored died an ugly death. The scales had tipped the wrong way, so much that I felt as if the room was off its axis.

I glanced in Jake’s direction in a panic. He was intent on Mekare and Stephen, ignoring the vampiress’s presence. Had he not noticed the vicious vamp come in? That was impossible. His sharp werewolf senses wouldn’t miss a thing, though there was still a ton of dust and magic tang floating in the air, which were making it hard to catch scents.

Eric was also oblivious to her presence, advancing toward the Midnight Witch, teeth bared and hackles standing on end.

Were they both blind? Or had Mekare zapped my brain so thoroughly that I was hallucinating?Ayep. That was it. My brain was nothing but a fried chicken wing. There was nothing else that could explain what I saw next.

Blaze strolled in and stood at Bernadetta’s side.

What in the holy witchlights?!

What was my cat doing here? And why were his eyes glowing like embers?

I blinked and shook my head to clear it, then took another look. Blaze was still there, and everyone was acting as if nothing weird was going on.

Well, not really.

Mekare and Stephen had gone utterly still, and their eyes were fixed on the vamp with the smoky-gray cat at her side.

“At last, I find you,” Bernadetta said in her deep voice. “You have proved quite elusive.”

Mekare took a step sideways as if to show that Stephen was also there, hiding behind her. Revealed, Stephen looked ready to pee his pants, or more precisely the floor since he wasn’t wearing any. But he wasn’t the only one who looked scared. Mekare also seemed in need of an adult diaper.

Now, I was really confused.

Mekare’s gaze lowered to Blaze. She shook herself and visibly straightened, making an effort to appear less intimidated. “Is that all you’ve got? A cat?”

“This is no ordinary cat. He’s a Copper Mage who’s incredibly pissed at you for many reasons,” the Dark Donna said, her petite figure appearing intimidating even amid the big pieces of debris that lay around her.

What?!

The cogwheels in my brain started turning. A Copper Mage? My heart skipped.
