Chapter 37

Mekare, still holdingthe jade dagger, lifted her free hand and shot a stream of dark magic toward Jake. Acting on instinct, I leaped over Stephen’s body and went for the witch. She jumped out of the way and released a second stream of magic in my direction. I flinched, my body tense as it foretold the pain, except, it never came.

I was unharmed, and so was Jake.

The witch cursed, and this time, she sent an attack toward Eric. Amber-colored energy fired out of Blaze’s eyes and met Mekare’s, effectively blocking it. She sent a hateful glower toward the cat.

“I regret not killing you,” she spat and flung a jolt of dark energy at him, which missed as Blaze gracefully leaped out of the way.

Crap! From the looks of it, those two had a history.

Changing tactics, Mekare twirled her free hand in the air, and the jade cup—the second piece that completed the Unholy Vessel—appeared there.

“Why don’t you give me a bit of your blood,Dark Donna?” the witch said mockingly. “Perhaps, I’ll feed it to Stephen so he can become a loyal servant. I think he’s still alive.” She threw a sidelong glance toward the fallen wolf, whose chest was now barely moving.

Bernadetta glowered at the witch.

“No?” Mekare said, returning her attention to the vamp. “Shame. Though, I guess it doesn’t matter since I already have a couple of those.”

A couple of those?

Did she mean the hybrids we’d fought in the forest?

Oh, God!

Were they here?

Mekare inhaled deeply, her eyelids fluttering as she threw her head back. “Come to mama,” she called, a wide smile spreading across her lips.

From somewhere in the house came a series of crashes that sounded as if a clumsy giant were tearing through the place in their haste to get here.

Jake and Eric’s ears swiveled in that direction and so did mine.

Without warning, the Dark Donna charged forward, blurring as she went for the witch. It all happened too fast for my eyes to follow, but the next thing I knew, Bernadetta had crashed against the wall behind where Mekare had been standing.

In place of the witch, a cloud of black smoke remained.

Blaze growled, his back arching and tail standing high in the air. A stream of amber magic shot from his eyes headed straight for the wavering smoke. Before it could hit it, the hazy cloud shrank down as if the floor were sucking it down like a spaghetti noodle, then it traveled sideways and regained its original size a few feet away.

I went for it, snapping my teeth around the smoke, biting into nothing. Jake and Eric moved closer to help but had to spin around as the hybrids appeared at the door. The beasts knocked into each other, baring their huge teeth and snapping at one another as each tried to enter first.
