“No idea,” Drevan said. “He’s omniscient, so if anyone got the idea to kill Him, He would know.”
“Make sense, I guess. But what about Jophiel?”
“Let me say he’d better not to lose track of that dagger.”
I sat up as if spring-loaded. “Striker’s Queller!”
“You forget I can’t wield it.”
“Yes, butIcan.”
Drevan blew air through his nose, amused. “You have as much chance of killing Jophiel as a flea killing a dog.”
I smacked his shoulder. “Gee, thanks.”
He sobered up. “Have you thought about what you will tell your friends?”
Hugging my middle, I pouted like a little child. I’d received a gazillion texts from Jenna and Sage demanding answers and asking where I was. I had carefully avoided all of them.
“Not really,” I said. “The truth, I guess. If that’s allowed…”
“It is.”
“Good. I don’t want to lie.”
Drevan’s expression grew gentle. “Youhavechanged.”
The words in his inquisitive eyes made me feel exposed. “For the better, I hope.”
“If you asked me, you’re tending toward perfection.”
I blinked, taken aback. That had to be the most romantic thing anyone had ever told me. Because it was romantic, right? No one told someone else that they were perfect unless…
His hand rose toward my face but stopped in midair. He set it back down on his lap and glanced away, appearing conflicted.
“Drevan?” I said in a near whisper.
He stared stubbornly toward the river.
I reached over, cupped his face in my hand, and guided him to look at me again. I tried to decipher all the emotions shaping his expression, but there was simply too much: pain, doubt, anger…
Why so much confusion?
But it was an unnecessary question because I knew the answer.
It was complicated.
Except at that moment, I didn’t give a damn.
Wetting my lips, I leaned closer and found myself saying all the things pride would have never let me divulge.
“I missed you while I was gone. I wanted to return so badly, to see you. I know it’s wrong to crave your presence, but I can’t help what I feel.”
He lowered his head and stared at the ground between us. Once more, I forced him to look up, and slowly, very slowly, I raised my mouth to his. Tentatively, I pressed a kiss to his lips. I heard his sharp intake of breath and sensed his entire body stiffen.
I pulled away, realizing he didn’t want my touch. I was such a fool. I started to stand, to leave, but he suddenly seized my face in his hands and kissed me back.
Where my kiss had been gentle and hesitant, his was forceful and desperate. His tongue ran over my lower lip, sending searing heat across every cell of my body. My skin tingled with a shiver, and my belly tightened in response to his animalistic surge of desire.
