His kiss was possessive and wild. There was something about it that seemed to claim me as if he’d set a stake in the ground and pronounced me his.

I had never liked it when guys got domineering like this, but with Drevan, it was different. I wanted to be his, entirely, in every possible way. If at that moment, he had asked me to lay my life in front of him to do as he pleased, I would have offered it on a silver platter.

Roughly tightening a fist in my hair, he laid me on the grass and deepened his kiss. His free hand slid down the column of my neck, over my shoulder, and down my arm. From there, it transferred to my waist and tightened, pulling me to him. His body was firm against my side and I felt his hardness on the edge of my hip. I wanted very badly for him to climb on top of me, but even though there was no one around, we were still out in the open.

My name burned on his lips as he trailed kisses across my jaw and down my collarbone. The heat that I’d seen brewing inside him last night seemed to permeate from his fingertips into my skin, burning in delicious ecstasy.

Aching for more, I let my hands roam over his solid torso, remembering its perfect ivory color and smooth quality.

Witchlights!I wanted him like I’d never wanted anything before.

Someone cleared their throat behind us. Drevan pulled away from me faster than a snake can bite. I blinked up at the sky, cursing whoever had dared interrupt us. For his part, Drevan appeared relieved. Extending a hand in my direction, he offered to help me up. I squeezed his fingers in mine and rose.

A gray-haired man dressed in a brown uniform was standing with his hands on his hips. His pose was meant to appear threatening, but there was a hint of a smile on his jovial face.

“Young lovers,” he said, “I hate to interrupt, but perhaps you can find a different place for your displays of affection.”

What a nice way to sayget a room.If only everyone were this nice.

“You’re quite right, officer.” Drevan inclined his head. “Though I assure you, I had no intentions of disrespecting the lady.”

The man’s eyebrows went up in surprise and so did mine, though for different reasons. While the officer was taken aback by the charming young man and his polite ways, I was wondering why our heated exchange didn’t lead him to plans of totallydisrespectingme.

Drevan saluted. “We will be on our way. Have a great day.”

“You too.” He started to leave, then stopped. “I hate to ask you this, but is it wrong of me to like another woman when my Doris passed away only six months ago?”

My attention shifted to Drevan’s eyes, where I found a hint of red glowing in their depths. He gave a slow blink, and the effect was gone.

The officer shook himself, looking bewildered.

“It’s quite all right, Officer Peters. Don’t worry about it,” Drevan said.

The older man smiled even if a bit uneasily, then walked away, scratching the back of his neck.

“That one is going nowhere near hell.” Drevan nodded fondly, throwing me for a loop.

Wasn’t he supposed to want people to go to hell? Maybe he did, just not right now that the place was overflowing.

Drevan interlaced his fingers in mine. “We should get back now. I only wanted to thank you.”

That queasy feeling began in my stomach. “Wait!” I tugged at his arm. “Can’t we talk about… us?

“Us,” he mused, sadness drawing his gaze downward. “Perhaps another time.”

“But Drevan, I—”

He pressed a finger to my lips. “Shh.”

I needed to know so much. Was what I felt for him right? If it was wrong, should I try to rip the disease out? Did he want me the same way I wanted him? Did he feel the same way I…?

Suddenly, I found that the muddled state of our relationship, the uncertainty, was better than the possible heartbreak his words might cause. Maybe I would be happier without the answers to my many questions. Maybe this game we were playing was the best I could hope for. And if that was the case, I was all right with it. It was delicious enough, dangerous enough, even if sometimes aching for him felt like a death sentence.
