Iclosedmyeyes. The shot rang out, deafening, a death sentence.

Several thoughts flashed through my mind…

How short life had been, how little I’d accomplished, how I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to my family… to Drevan.

Drevan, would I ever see him again?

If I did, that would mean I’d earned my spot in hell, which, oddly, felt like the right place for me, the place where I wanted to go.

Yep, you’re insane.

My voice of reason was, of course, right. Especially because my eyes were still closed, and I felt nothing at all. No pain. No impact. No shock.

But maybe that was how death felt. Not too bad, actually.

Slowly, I peeled one eye open. Darkness blotted my vision, and it took me a moment to realize that a pair of magnificent black wings were positioned a hair’s breadth from my face.

Drevan was here!

He had taken the bullet for me—not that it meant much since bullets couldn’t hurt him, but still. My bones turned to water with relief, and I nearly toppled to my knees.

I wasn’t dead. I would get to live, to accomplish things.

Well, maybe…

“You’ve lost your way, Jophiel,” Drevan said in a deep quiet voice that made me think of dark, cold places.

“No, no, no,” this from Solar.

I glanced toward him. He was on his knees, his face tear-stricken. His sister lying in front of him, blood spilling from a wound in her stomach.

Oh, shit!

How?! How did that happen?! I rushed to their side, forgetting all about Drevan and Jophiel.

Kneeling next to Lunar’s prone shape, I felt my heart skip a beat at the sight of all the blood. “Oh, my God!”

Rebecca was kneeling on the other side of Lunar, holding her daughter’s hand and crying. “This is all your fault. Why couldn’t you just do something worthwhile? Why did you have to get involved with criminals? Why?!”

“It’s not my fault,” Solar sobbed. “It’sherfault.” He pointed at me.

What? Me?!

I shook my head. “I… I…”

And that was when I realized what had happened. The bullet that had ricocheted from the sword had hit Lunar.Oh, no!

“Drop it!” Drevan shouted as he took hold of Jophiel’s wrist, and they started fighting over the weapon. Go figure. An angel and a demon fighting over a gun.

Drevan’s wings were out of sight now, but I wondered if Rebecca or Solar had caught a glimpse of them.Witchlights! If Drevan and Jophiel didn’t stop, someone else was going to end up shot. I tried to get a glimpse of Drevan’s face, but his back was to me.

Pushing thoughts of them aside, I asked, “Did you call 911?”

“Hold on, baby. Hold on,” Rebecca said, kissing Lunar’s hand. “Marius is on his way to help you.”

Who?!
