“Are you sure about that?” I tease, nuzzling her ear. “I think you’d miss my gifts.”
Angelica purses her lips, and I place my hand over her cheek, leaving a searing kiss on her mouth that cuts off any protest she was about to make.
“That’s what I thought.”
Right then, the elevator dings and the door opens to reveal our guest.
Angelica is unable to conceal her delight. “Oh my God, Aria!” she squeals, running to her friend for a hug.
“Giegie,” Aria cries out in return as they embrace. I can’t help but smile at their reunion.
It’s been several devastating days since we’ve come back to Cebrene, so I wanted to surprise her in the hopes of lightening her mood.
Angelica faces me, her eyes full of emotion, and swallows a lump in her throat. “Did you arrange this?”
But Aria replies instead, “He did. By the way, is he always so mysterious and weird through texts?”
Angelica giggles, and it’s the first time I’ve heard her laugh in a while. Something loosens in my chest at the sound. I’m happy that Aria is able to bring her some joy, but I’m also bitter that I’m not the one making her laugh.
Aria eyes me through narrowed lids. “Are you having an internal jealousy fit, Evander?”
“And what if I was?” I reply, trying, and probably failing, to keep it cool.
“Nothing. I recognize that look. Di—” she stops halfway through her sentence, guilt written all over her face.
I know exactly what she was about to say. Dion gives her the same look.
That motherfucker. He told me he’d stopped messing with her, given that she’s getting married in a few short months.
Angelica cuts in. “I think we have some catching up to do,” she tells Aria, knowing exactly what her friend was about to say too.
I take a few steps back. “I’ll leave you two alone. I’ll be in my office if you need anything, angel.”
Pouring myself a generous glass of ouzo, I sit back in my chair and face out the windows. It’s dark out, the stars shining bright.
I’m waiting for a call from Dion, so I answer my phone right away when it rings.
“Poutánas yos, I thought you were done with the Kastellanos girl.”
Dion almost chokes on his drink. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
“Relax, adelfé, you’re not in trouble. She’s here spending time with—”
“Aria is at Saintville?” he cuts me off, sounding surprised.
In the background, I hear shuffling and a door closing.
I scoff. “Yes, Dion. She came over to see my wife and mentioned you.”
“What did she say?” I smile at the eagerness in his voice.
“Nothing except that you’re a jealous fuck.”
“I’m coming over. Be there in twenty,” he rushes out and hangs up the phone. Here we go.
Twenty exact minutes later, I’m alerted that someone has disengaged the alarm. I walk out to the living area and the girls eye me suspiciously from the couch.
“What’s going on?” Angelica asks.
