“But how am I connected to all that?” I ask.

The doctor straightens the papers on his desk. “Like I said, you’re an unusual case. I presume they thought that understanding you might help them with their research. Or it could even be more complicated than that. I’ve heard talk of a theory that harvesting an omega’s hormones while she’s in heat might provide a successful treatment. And the hormones of a newly presented omega. A newly presented and older omega would be that much more potent.”

Axel growls his disapproval beside me and Silver leans forward on his chair.

“Any idea who could have been behind Bea’s abduction?”

“You said one of the doctors is already under arrest.”

“Yes, but he was working for someone. Someone with money and muscle power.”

“There are several pharmaceutical companies looking into this area of research but I doubt very much that any of them would stoop to such illegal activities.”

Axel snorts like he doesn’t believe that for a second.

“Anyway,” the doctor says, “that’s in the past, something I’m sure the young lady wants to forget.”

“I do,” I say.

“Well, let’s get you sorted then.” He opens the notepad in front of him and unscrews the lid from his pen. “Let’s start with some of the details …”

I tell him my date of birth, my height and weight and the date I first presented as well as the date of my first heat.

“Your heat came on very rapidly,” the doctor says, “there is usually many weeks between presentation and a first heat. No wonder you’ve felt all in a muddle.”

“Dr. Hannah seemed to think it was normal.”

“Dr. Hannah who hasn’t been seen since your abduction,” Silver points out.

“You really think she was involved?” I ask.

“She told you that other doctor was her colleague.”

“And we’re pretty certain he was the one who broke into your apartment. Along with a woman.”

I draw my hands up to my throat, the air in the room suddenly tasting sour. I shake my head; I can’t believe she was in on it. I remember how frightened she seemed at that clinic.

“Did this Dr. Hannah have you on any particular medication?” Dr. Clive asks gently.

“Yes,” I say, pulling my purse up onto my lap, and diving inside for the packets of pills she gave me. “Scent blockers,” I say, passing them over to Dr. Clive, “and suppressants to help regulate my hormones.”

Dr. Clive takes the second packet from my hand and examines the box, then opens them up and pops out a pill. He brings it to his nose and sniffs. Then he places them down on his desk and looks up at the three of us.

“I can’t be certain. I’d need to send these pills to the lab. But I don’t think they are suppressants, in fact I think they are fertility drugs.”

My mouth drops open and the air not only turns sour, it turns suffocating. “What?” I choke out.

“These pills are designed for omegas struggling with fertility or who want to become pregnant quickly. They bring on a heat.”

“What the fuck!” Axel says, jumping up from his seat and grabbing the pills. He sniffs them himself and coughs, then throws them back on the desk.

“But I’m still taking them,” I say in alarm. “I thought they were suppressants.”

“Have you been taking them regularly since your heat ended?” the doctor asks.

“Yes!” In fact, I’m pretty sure I took one as soon as I felt vaguely normal.

“How long has that been?”
