“We should have done it sooner,” Axel says.

“And I assume this is the woman responsible?” the doctor says, holding his hand out to me. “Mrs. Stormgate has told me all about you.”

“I’m Bea,” I tell him, shaking his hand and then taking Silver’s again immediately.

“Well, come in,” Dr. Clive tells us, “and let’s see how I can help you.”

I guess the doctor’s used to dealing with packs because there are a large number of chairs inside his office. I take the central one, Axel and Silver sitting either side of me, and the doctor perches on the edge of his desk.

I look to Axel.

“Bea’s a newly presented omega, and she’s having some difficulty regulating her emotions and feelings.”

“Newly presented,” the doctor says with a sympathetic smile. “How old are you, Bea?”

“Twenty six.”

He rests his hands in his lap. “Ahhh, yes, of course, I’ve heard about you.”

Axel frowns, glancing at Silver. “From my mom?”

“Yes, from your mom, but also from the medical community in the city. There’s been quite a bit of chatter about you, young lady.”

“There has?” I ask, alarm spiking in my gut, my scent peaking and Silver squeezing my hand. “Why?”

“You’re a very unusual case and medical professionals are always fascinated by unusual cases. There’s been lots of chatter about why you may have presented so late and what finally triggered you.”

“He did,” I say, turning to face Axel. “It was Axel.”

“I triggered you?” he says.

“I think so, yes.”

“Who was the doctor who first started the discussion of Bea’s case?” Silver asks.

“I don’t remember,” the doctor says.

“It would be very helpful to us, if you could remember, perhaps you could go back through your messages.”

Dr. Clive stares at Silver.

“Are you aware of what happened to Bea?” Axel asks quietly.

“Beyond her unusual presentation,” the doctor says slowly, “no.”

Axel glances at me and I nod at him. With Melody Grande knowing, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s all over social media and in every newspaper anyway.

Axel explains about my abduction with Silver adding in a few details.

A frown forms on Dr. Clive’s face that grows deeper and deeper as my story progresses.

When Axel’s finally done, the doctor is quiet for a moment, then he says, “I’m very sorry to hear all this, Bea. Very sorry indeed. We take a Hippocratic oath to help people and do no harm. Unfortunately it seems there are always bad apples in this profession.”

He stands up and walks to sit behind his desk.

“Any idea what their motive could have been?” Silver asks.

“Well, yes. Money, what else? There’s a fortune to be made if someone discovers a drug or a treatment that could turn betas into omegas. Or even betas into alphas. I’m sure you are aware there are already some drugs circulating on the black market, although as far as I know they are pretty worthless. Nothing more than perfume capsules.”
