A week later,it was Christmas Eve, and I was spending it laying on the couch with Declan in my arms, the flames in the fireplace and the Christmas tree lights providing the only light in the room. I couldn’t think of anything better. He’d barely made it through the door two hours earlier before I stripped him out of his clothes and had my way with him right there in the living room.

“Do you have to go home tonight, or can you stay here and leave in the morning?”

His mom was driving to Boston to spend Christmas Day with him, but I wasn’t sure if he needed to get things ready ahead of her visit.

“I can stay.” He trailed a hand up and down my stomach. “She’s supposed to get in around eleven tomorrow and Sam will be there because her family is celebrating tonight. What time are Ryan and Morgan coming over?”

“I told them we were eating lunch at one, so they’ll probably show up around noon or so.”

“Okay. Do you want to exchange gifts now so we can sleep in?”

“Gifts? I wasn’t expecting you to get me anything.”

“What do you mean?” He pushed off the couch. “Did you really think I wouldn’t get you a gift after you said you bought me one?”

I sat up. “I didn’t tell you that to make you feel you had to get one for me. I enjoy giving gifts. It’s kind of my thing.”

“Noted.” He grinned and walked to his duffle bag he’d dropped by the door.

While he rummaged through his stuff, I went over to the Christmas tree and grabbed the wrapped box I had for him. I sat back down on the couch, and he returned with a box covered in silver paper and a red gift bag. He dropped down beside me and handed over the wrapped present.

“Open this one first.”

I made quick work of the paper and found a bottle of Macallan. “How’d you know this is my favorite whisky?”

“I didn’t know it was your favorite, but I knew you liked it. You’re not the only one who pays attention.” He beamed. “It’s what you were drinking when we were in Cape Cod.”

That night at the Donnelleys’ house was my first glimpse of the man Declan was outside of the office. And while my feelings hadn’t been romantic then, I remembered how much I’d enjoyed his company and getting to know him better.

“So, you were watching me all the way back then?” I teased.

“Are you kidding? I’ve been watching you since my first Fourth of July party at the Donnelleys’. Of course, back then it was just because I thought you were hot. It’s obviously turned into more since then.”

It was on the tip of my tongue to tell him how much he meant to me, but something held me back. Not that I doubted my feelings for him, but we weren’t publicly out as a couple. Until I could give him that, I didn’t think I should make any big declarations.

“Well, it’s a great gift. Thank you.” I gave him a peck on the lips. “Now open mine.”

“You don’t want to see your other one first?”

I handed him the present wrapped in green paper with a white bow. “I can’t wait any longer.”

“Okay.” He chuckled as he untied the ribbon and carefully removed the paper in one piece. His eyes widened when he saw the white box with the Rolex logo. “You didn’t,” he breathed.

I smiled. “Keep going.”

He lifted the lid, revealing the green jewelry box, and flipped it open. “Sean, this is amazing.” He ran a finger over the black and silver face. “But it’s too much. I can’t possibly accept this.”

“Of course you can.”

“Thank you,” he whispered with a look of appreciation on his face. “I love it.”

He slipped the watch on and admired it for a few moments, then handed me the other gift he’d brought. “This seems a bit silly now, but I hope you like it anyway.”

“I’m sure I will.” I dug through the gold tissue paper and reached inside to pull out black fabric. I barked out a laugh when I realized it was a pair of boxer briefs with words printed on the crotch that read, “I love your …,” and in place of the word cock was the image of a rooster. “These are great. I can’t wait to wear them.”

“And I’m looking forward to getting you out of them when you do.” He winked.

I wrapped my hand around the back of his neck and brought him in close. What was meant to be a simple kiss turned into a full-blown make-out session that led to me taking him again on the couch.
