Of course, the number flashing on the screen confirmed her identity, too.

I resisted the urge to stroke said figure as she looked around, clearly trying to find her eyesight.

“At least she’s standing up,” I mused aloud, thinking of how dizzy she had to be after however many minutes of constant falling.

“In heels, too,” Typhos replied.

“Yes, because you didn’t allow her to change.”

“You could have given her a spell for clothing.”

“Hmm,” I hummed. “Maybe I preferred the dress, after all.” It was rather revealing, the kind of fabric one dreams of peeling off a woman. “I chose to help her with nourishment instead.” The heat made her clothing irrelevant. She’d honestly be better off running naked through the trials.

Of course, that would detract from a future trial where that would actually be a requirement.

So her dress would do for now.

“As did Ajax,” Ty mused.

Yes. As did Ajax,I echoed with an internal smile.

The Midnight Fae had played right into my hands last night, going to check on her and then providing her with gifts of food. He’d even shrouded her in a cooling spell, one that had likely followed her into her first trial.

A ring of fire formed around Ty’s glass beside me, his power igniting as he attempted to add a dangerous element to his preferred drink. I watched his throat work as he swallowed some of the fiery liquid, his control resolute.

Yet I sensed the slight fracture inside him, the imperfection that required my constant repair.

The source had grown exponentially over the years, pushing more and more energy into Typhos. He managed it well on the surface, but I sensed the toll it took on his soul to keep everything in balance.

He wouldn’t admit it out loud.

But that was all right.

I knew the truth. And I would fix him. In time.

My focus returned to the screen once more as Camillia slowly inched forward, her stance and pace telling me she was listening carefully to her surroundings.

Good girl, I thought. But you could create a light.

Since I’d given her a spell for that.

Of course, she wasn’t using it.

Because she didn’t trust me.

Yet she’d readily repeated the bonding spell.

That was what confused me—why had she accepted that gift and not the knowledge? Did she not believe I would protect her? Because even now I could feel my soul pushing energy her way to keep her safe. Protecting her in the dark. Pulsing life through her veins.

Why are you ignoring such an obvious spell?I wondered at her.Just create some fire, little angel. Use it to guide you.

Alas, she just continued to feel her way through the maze, her silhouette only visible to my eyes because of the enhanced technology following her.

Ty’s palm went to my thigh, his fingers squeezing. “You’re still tense.”

“Am I?” I relaxed into his side, my head lying on his shoulder while I continued to watch the darkened screen. “Perhaps you can help me with that.”

He ran his fingers along the inner seam of my dress pants, following it upward to my groin. “You still owe me six nights, little prince,” he whispered against my ear.
