CHAPTER5

CAMI

A boom sounded, the echo reverberating my chest and knocking the wind out of my lungs.

What…?

My eyes blinked open, the sensation of sleep tugging at my lashes and blurring my vision.

I rubbed at my face, only for my nose to scrunch at the briny texture left behind.

That’s… weird.

I lowered my palms and blinked again, this time my surroundings coming into view.

Oh… what the…?

An ocean.

Vast. Deep. Spreading out before me like an infinite blue landscape.

And I was sitting on a stone dock of some kind.

Where did the boom come from?I wondered, glancing over the waves and the mist spraying all around me.

Except, the mist wasn’t from the water. It was coming from the sky.

Or maybe… it’s from me?

No…

Scrambling to my feet, I squinted against the murky sun to get a better look at the sky in front of me. The air was swirling as if a portal had just closed, leaving the water twisting underneath it in a vortex that was growing larger—not smaller.

A swallow stuck in my throat as I turned around to see if I could run. Being trapped in a vortex ocean of death did not sound like an appealing way to die.

But I was met with Lucifer’s visage when I spun to find out where the stone dock led.

No land anywhere in sight. Only a massive statue glowering down at me with disapproval.

What. The. Fuck?

It was an island.

An island dedicated to Lucifer’s disapproving face.

Is this another trial?I wondered, noting that the platform was large enough to hold a significant number of people.

Like what was left of 666 brides.

Except I was all alone.

And I’m no longer a bride.

This place also didn’t feel natural.

The air twisted around me, yet I felt nothing. No warming kiss from the sun. No chill from the oceanic breeze. No moisture from the mist.

It was as though a numbness had taken over, leaving behind a strange sensation of being encased in an invisible bubble.
