“Any help you guys need, I’m in,” Mia declared, the blood in her veins rushing through her body.
“No,” Edward growled, moving toward her.
“I’m in,” Mia said, her voice harder than before.
“You’re fucking pregnant, so no.”
“Your family and the pack won’t let anything happen to us. You can’t stop me from being there to help Claudia get her sister back and rescuing these women from this asshole. Have you even heardhalfof what these women go through? What Claudia and Katia went through? How the hell do you think I can stand by and not help? Especially not now that our baby is growing inside me. No, Edward, you don’t have a say in this matter. I need to do this for Claudia, Katia, these women, and any future women at risk.”
“Eddie, we’ll protect her—both of them—with our lives,” Ethan announced.
“We’ll put things in place to protect Mia and the baby if she wants to help,” Brandy told Edward.
Mia watched him shove both hands through his hair. The ends stuck up as he lost control of the situation. She sucked in a breath and placed a hand over his heart. “I love you, Edward, but I need to do this.”
Emotion flashed through his eyes as a battle raged within him. She felt the moment he relented, his gaze dropping to her stomach.
“I don’t like this,”he told her.
“I understand,”she said and cupped his cheek.
“I love you so damn much and can’t lose you,”he declared.
“And I love you too. I can’t promise I won’t get hurt, but I can tell you… the need to help? I feel it in my bones. I have to,”she told him before kissing him softly and returning her attention to Peter.
“You two done?” Peter asked.
Mia nodded and did not bother to check if Edward did. She loved him but had no plans of risking their baby or sitting on the sidelines.
Peter clapped his hands. “Good. So now we know where they are, but with the added men on Sivella’s compound, we need to do more reconnaissance. I don’t want to lose any of our people, not one. We still haven’t recovered from the last fight. Mia? We’ll do everything to keep you safe. Claudia? We’re hoping to know more on how many women might be there and if your sister is one.”
“Thank you,” Claudia said, her voice stronger than Mia expected.
“E, you can’t tell if Claudia’s sister is there?” Junior asked.
Ethan shook his head. “Every time I’ve tried to tune into them, I haven’t been able to. It’s like I’m being blocked.”
“Did that happen last time?” Mia asked.
“No. They legit had no idea we were coming. I’m worried they now have a witch on their side who’s blocking me,” he admitted.
“That would make sense,” Peter said.
“I can try to use my link with earth to see if magic is being used before we even go in,” Mia said.
“That would be fantastic. We’re pretty sure we already checked this land, and we hadn’t seen anything, so I’m thinking someone’s using magic there.” Peter’s voice sounded raw as power vibrated through him.
The next twenty minutes were spent with an open discussion of the witches’ powers. A few of the Brodericks announced they had learned and mastered new spells, including Brandy, who had strengthened her control and call on the elements.
Once the topic was tabled, the air vibrated with excitement and nerves. Joel and the mysterious wolf—who she later learned was Xander, Peter’s beta—ate before leaving. Peter followed them out after telling everyone he would be in touch once they formulated a plan.
Chapter 33
Edward slept like shit.
After the rollercoaster that had been family dinner, he brought Mia back to his apartment. A herd of elephants separated them as they went through their usual nighttime routine. Fatherhood, Mia’s stubborn insistence to join the rescue party, and the next step for them as a couple loomed over his head.
He was a businessman and liked to get things done. It was obvious he would be unable to change her mind about going after the scumbag werewolves. A part of him was proud as hell, and if it were not for the baby growing inside her, he would have not fought her so hard. Logically, he knew she would not do anything to jeopardize herself or their kid. Emotionally, he hated not having a defensive power to protect her.
