“How’s it coming over there, Erin?” Rafe asked in a clipped tone.
“She’s almost there,” Brenna answered for her daughter, who was still lost in the chant she was working on.
“Your wolf is an Alpha. I can feel his power. He’s strong. Stronger than me. Why have you never challenged me for power over the pack?” Rafe asked.
“I have no desire to lead a pack. Even if I did, the big man would never allow it. He keeps me on task—so to speak.”
“Is that likely to change?” Rafe asked.
“Nope. My position with the big man is eternal.”
“Care to explain?”
“Nope.” Wade shook his head. “There’s only one person I’m free to share the info with and you’re not her.”
“Go now! I’m not sure how long I can keep it open!” Erin shouted.
“Go!” Brenna motioned to the group. “I’ll stay here with Erin and help her.”
“Get in there and get out. We don’t have time for a fight,” Erin yelled.
“Text Tanner. Get him to your position now. Have him ready for us when we get back.” Rafe tossed his phone to Brenna who fired off the text and pocketed Rafe’s phone.
Tanner was limited to teleporting one or two people at a time, but in a pinch, it would work.
And they were definitely in a pinch.
Wade, on the other hand, didn’t have to be told twice. He latched onto Grace and Rafe and flashed forward to the location of the shadowed figures.
“Adalyn!” he shouted as soon as she came into view.
She stood with her arms outstretched, ignoring the fact that she and her mother were no longer alone. Flames shot from her fingertips, arching toward Mariska, who had done her best to erect a barrier to keep the majikal flames at bay. Standing directly behind his mate was her father, the pack’s long-lost Alpha. So frail and weak, he looked as if he might collapse at any second.
A quick survey of the area told Wade that Adalyn had been handling her own, judging by the bodies of the guards who lay smoldering around Mariska. The vision was something straight out of Hell and he’d seen it enough times to know the horrific accuracy.
A cold shiver brushed the back of his neck, goosebumps broke out across his skin. The sight was definitely not something for the faint of heart to witness. It was a sight he’d never wanted his mate to see, yet here they were.
Adalyn appeared to have the upper hand with her mother, but they needed to move quickly and get the hell outta Dodge—asafp! There was no telling what Mariska would do to keep Adalyn and Bjorn from escaping.
Not wanting to break her concentration, Wade motioned for Rafe and Grace to tend to Bjorn as he went to stand beside his mate. “Get him out of here now. Head straight back to Black Paw. Don’t wait for us. We’ll meet you there as soon as we can.”
The second her connection to Mariska broke, he’d grab her and flash her to safety. He just had to wait for the right moment, pulling her away too soon was too risky. Her death would not be at his hands.
