Damn, I really don’t want this, but I need something. I just can’t bring myself to sit, so instead, I lean against the bar next to her with my back to the meeting room and my torso toward the front door. Just in case I need to run.
“You’re Seth, right?”
She holds out her hand and we shake. Her hand is tiny and warm, and it just doesn’t feel right. Nothing about this feels right.
“I’m Tracy.” She moves in her seat. Glancing down, I catch her hard nipples poking through the T-shirt. “How about a drink?” Batting her lashes, she smiles at me.
Caught in my thoughts, I don’t move.
“Seth? You okay?”
Glancing at the door, I know I have to give up on the fantasy of Dr. Holly. Yeah, we had a connection. But the fact that she didn’t even send a thank-you for the flowers should have been my wake-up call. Dr. Holly, in all her perfection, is not the type of woman for me. Tracy is.
“Seth?”
“Yeah, sorry. Fine. You want a beer?”
“Yes.” She smiles so wide it looks like her cheeks might break.
Ducking behind the bar, I reach into a cooler and I grab two beers. Popping the top off of both with my hands, I give her one.
“With your hands!” She playfully fans herself with her own. “So strong…” she mumbles, reaching out and squeezing my arm. “All these muscles.”
Reaching her hand up higher, she lays it behind my neck, and before I realize what’s happening, she lifts herself up, balancing on the rung of the stool, and plants a kiss on my lips. Pulling back, I resist the urge to wipe my mouth with my hand. She tastes like fruity gum and cigarettes.
“So, you wanna go somewhere?” Staring up at me, her small blue eyes grow wider.
Damn. Picking up my beer, I lean back and take a long pull from the bottle. Anything would be better than all this noise and all these people. Placing the bottle down, I let my gaze run over the crowd, wondering where to take this girl because I don’t want her knowing where I live… and my focus goes to the front door where—
Fuck.
Fuck!
Fuck!
There, by the front door of Hoppa’s Taphouse, wearing a white doctor’s coat hanging open over a blue V-neck shirt and a pair of dark gray dress pants, is Dr. Holly Boling.
“Holly?” Pushing my way through the crowd, I fight to get to her, but I’m too late.
Shaking her head at me, she turns and disappears out the door.
Chapter Four
Dynamite
“Holly!” Yelling her name, I rush out to her.
Catching up to her at her car door, I resist the urge to reach out and touch her. My breathing is almost as fast as hers, and it’s like I can feel the energy rushing back and forth between us.
“What do you want, Seth?” She presses the key fob on her fancy car and the doors unlock.
“You. I mean, I wanted to see you.” Coward. “You surprised me.”
Looking up at me, I can see the hurt written all over her face. “Yeah? Well, you surprised me, too.” Dropping her gaze to her door handle, she mutters, “I mean, by coming to the hospital tonight.” Taking a deep breath and letting it go, she looks up at me. “Why were you there? Did you know those men? They weren’t part of your club, were they?”
Shaking my head, I look into her eyes and refuse to look away. It’s like I’m holding her here with me. “They’re not part of the Steel Knights, no. One club there tonight, the Black Vipers, they’re our allies. The man you saved in the lobby… when you climbed onto his gurney?”
She nods.
