“But all my stuff is in there.” The stress was wearing on her again, and her voice got higher.
“Angel, it’s okay. We’ll get it, but we can’t stay there yet.”
“Okay, but instead of a hotel, how about we stay at my parent’s house?”
“I didn’t know you still had it,” Chase said.
“Yeah, I couldn’t stay there alone, but I couldn’t bring myself to sell it yet either.”
“Okay, we can do that,” Jasper said. “But first let’s go see the babies.” He gave Chase a brief nod to let him know everything was okay, and they went to visit the nursery.
Alex was looking at his children with Hunter when they got there. It’s like the dog understood what was going on. Staring through the window of the nursery at the two newest Barretts was completely awe inspiring. The babies were beautiful and a good size for twins. Rori said it was amazing they’d gone full term since so many twins are born early.
“Congratulations. Twins, too. You’re going to be up to your eyeballs in dirty diapers.”
Hunter woofed and they laughed.
“That’s for damn sure. But I wouldn’t miss it for anything.”
“I should record that. I bet in about three months you’ll have changed your tune.”
“No way.” Jasper envied him a little, as he gazed at his children and rubbed Hunter’s head, apparently a service dog could go everywhere except the delivery room. He’d been through a lot to get there, but it seemed like most of the guys at ESP had. It was time for him to settle down too.
“So are you going to tell us their names?” Rori asked.
“Emma and Henry, and we’re hoping you will be Henry’s godmother, Rori. Chloe and Logan will be Emma’s godparents.”
“Oh my God, I’d love to. I’d be honored. Thank you.”
“If you’re sticking around, Lily and I would like you to be Henry’s godfather.”
“Are you sure? You don’t know me very well.”
“Lily insisted, said you made Rori happy again and that made you the perfect person.”
Jasper was more than surprised. It was the last thing he’d expected. “Well, then I’d be happy to.”
“Great. Now that it’s all settled, get the hell out of here so I can spend time with my new family.”
When they got downstairs, Chase and Faith were waiting to take them by the apartment and then to her parent’s house. Jasper kept hoping his phone would ring with the word they’d nabbed Cynthia. But so far there hadn’t been anything at all.
He helped Rori change the sheets on the bed and air out the house. Then he called and ordered another pizza since she’d enjoyed it so much and he couldn’t remember the last time either of them had eaten.
His phone rang just after the pizza was delivered. His first instinct was to thank God, but then what if it was bad news.
“Hey Steele, what’s up?”
“It’s done. She was hiding out at her family’s summer house on Martha’s Vineyard. If it wasn’t for one of the maids we probably wouldn’t have found her. Her family was trying to get her to South America.”
“Mother fuckers. I mean I guess I can understand not wanting to lose both children, but she almost killed Rori, and if we hadn’t gotten the van to stop who knows how many others too.”
“You’re preaching to the choir. But at least Rori can sleep tonight knowing it’s finally finished.”
“Thanks. I appreciate all the help.”
Rori was sitting more patiently than he would have under the circumstances, but maybe she’d already figured it out.
“They got her. It’s over, Angel. You’re safe.”
“Thank God.”
