Her cheeks were pale, so different from the beautiful blush she had a half-hour ago. Hearing his voice, she looked up at him but there was no life in her eyes. It was like the light went out.

“Listen to me, baby. I don’t care who or what he is for the FBI. I don’t care if I have to rot in jail for the rest of my life, that man is not going to ever hurt you again. I promised you I’d keep you safe and I swear it on my mother’s grave.”

One minute she’d been on the bed, the next she’d practically thrown herself into his arms. Holding her tight, he kissed the top of her head. They needed to get back, as much as he hated it.

“We have to go. Okay?”

“Yeah, let’s go. I’m sure my mom will be happy to have me back.”

“I’m sure she will.”

They arrived at JEB Little Creek. He wished with all of his heart that he could have kept her from being involved, but orders were orders, the ones from his captain. Fuck the FBI.

He escorted her into the building and stopped at the front desk to pick up her visitor’s pass. Sky had grabbed his hand when he’d helped her out of the truck and she only let go long enough to sign in.

“This is where you work?”

“Yes, it is. We’re meeting in the conference room and all the guys will be there too.”

“Okay.”

When they reached the door to the room, he lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed her fingers. “We’ve got your back, Sky. Don’t forget that.”

She lifted her eyes to his. The empty look was gone, replaced with determination. “I won’t.”

With a deep breath, he pulled open the door and they entered the proverbial lion’s den.

When Murph opened the door all discussion inside the room stopped. If that wasn’t enough to make someone nervous, Jen didn’t know what would. It was like being the new kid in school.

“Ms. Turner, I’m Captain Knox. It’s nice to meet you. I think you know almost everyone else here.”

The last thing she wanted to do was let go of Murph’s hand, but she couldn’t exactly blow off his boss. “Captain.” She couldn’t bring herself to say more than that. Maybe she was acting like a petulant child, but it wasn’t at all nice to be there under these circumstances.

“This is Special Agent in Charge Jones. He’s going to explain a few things to us.”

Beside her, Murph stiffened with the captain’s words. She didn’t like the wholeexplain thingseither. It sounded like she was about to get railroaded.

He led her over to the table and pulled out a chair for her, so she was sitting between him and Jake. He gave her a reassuring smile, but until she heard what the FBI agent had to say, she wouldn’t be able to relax.

“The room is yours, Agent Jones.”

“Special Agent.”

“My apologies, the room is yours Special Agent Jones.”

Was he serious about his title? Jen was ready to get up and leave already if he was that much of a jerk over his title, what the hell was coming next?

“Isn’t there another member of your team?”

“No, everyone is here,” Knox said. It seemed that the captain wasn’t particularly fond of the special agent either. Knowing how closely guarded they kept Tex, she figured no one was happy that he knew about him.

“Ms. Turner, you had an issue with Mr. Kurt Walker, is that correct?”

An issue? That’s what he thought she had. He’d barely started talking and steam was already coming out of her ears. “I think it was a bit more than an issue. He held me against my will and beat me.”

“Noted. But you’re safe now, correct?”
