“I don’t know, am I? I’d like to think so, but how can I be sure he won’t come after me? He wasn’t exactly thrilled when I got away. And don’t forget the fifty thousand dollar reward.”

“Seventy-five thousand,” Jake corrected.

“Oh yeah, how could I have forgotten?” she asked.

“As of two days ago, yes.”

“So you see Special Agent Jones,” Jen made sure to enunciate each syllable. “I don’t feel very safe.”

“We’ve had him rescind the reward.”

“Can you do that?”

“Ma’am, we’re the FBI.”

Oh and that was supposed to make her feel better? “Why aren’t you arresting him? He hurt me and probably many other women.”

“All I’ve been cleared to share is that he’s helping us on a case to take down a very bad man.”

He was talking to her like she was six years old. Who says ‘very bad man’ to an adult? If Murph hadn’t rested his hand on hers, she might have really lost it. Where all this anger was coming from she wasn’t sure, but it was one hundred percent better than being terrified.

“And when you close the case on the HVT will you arrest him then?” Jake asked.

Jen didn’t have a clue what he was talking about, but Murph leaned over and whispered into her ear. “High-value target.”

“I’m not at liberty to say.”

“Meaning you’re going to put him in WITSEC. Where he’ll be free to hurt other women,” Murph was almost shouting by the time he finished.

“Chief Petty Officer Murphy.”

“Apologies, Captain.”

When Jen looked over at the captain when he called Murph out, he winked at her. At first, she thought she’d imagined it. Did they all hate this FBI asshole?

“What happens to him is no concern. He has agreed to leave Ms. Turner alone.”

“And you believe him?” Murph asked more calmly.

“If he doesn’t comply he loses his deal. Ms. Turner, I can assure you that you’re in no further danger from Mr. Walker.”

“Honestly, I don’t know how you can assure me of anything, Special Agent. He’s a crazy violent man. I don’t believe he’ll leave me alone until one of us is dead.”

“Is that a threat, Ms. Turner?”

“Do I look like I could be a threat? I’m sorry but I’ve spent the last year of my life terrified, humiliated and brutalized by him. I can’t just forget that and walk away.”

“I’m afraid you’re going to have to. If you insist on antagonizing him you’ll be arrested until the case has been closed.”

“Arrested? On what charge?” Cam said.

“Obstruction of justice.”

Jen looked at Jake and when he nodded all her bravado evaporated like a balloon deflating. She didn’t care what he said, there is no way Kurt would leave her alone.

“From this point forward you are to leave Mr. Walker alone. No more clandestine investigations, no more hacking into his computers. Captain Knox, I expect you will make sure they comply?”

“Hacking? We’re SEALs, Special Agent, not hackers. I have to remind you that Ms. Turner isn’t under my command.”
