Harmony nodded, then kissed his chin. It was so cute and eased some of his tension. “It’s been very boring at work, so when Wendy called me into her office just before closing, I was pretty surprised.”
“Has she ever done that before?”
“Nope. And what’s weirder is she came to my office and stood in the doorway to ask me to come to her office. Weird, right?”
Ry nodded.
“When I went into her office, she made me wait while she finished a call. That was weird too, because she just asked me to come in and I didn’t hear her phone ring. But anyway, she put a written warning in my employee file.”
Ry tensed, and when she looked up at him, he forced himself to relax. “For what?”
“That’s what I asked. The only thing I could think of would be the trouble with Harry. But it wasn’t that, it was for fraternization on bank properly. The goodbye kiss you gave me the day everything went to crap? Apparently, the surveillance camera caught our kiss.”
“You got a written warning for that? It was hardly anything and so quick if you sneezed you’d have missed it.”
“Exactly. But it wouldn’t do any good to argue with her. She told me it was in my employee contract.” Harmony picked a document off the table and handed it to him. “She’s right, it’s there, but I hardly believe they meant a goodbye kiss.”
“I doubt it either,” Ry said as he perused the contract.
“Then she told me that if it happened again, I’d be terminated. But that wasn’t the weird thing. She said I should keep you away from the bank. And implied that if the Harry issue caused trouble in the bank, they’d blame me for it.”
“What the fuck?”
“Exactly what I thought, though not in those words.” Harmony gave him a half-grin.
She’d come a long way while they were together. The other day, this would have turned her into a huge ball of anxiety.
“I don’t get why she told you that I need to stay away. Or why she had to have the discussion in her office. It’s almost as if she had someone listening. Is that possible?”
“Maybe? It’s possible I suppose. I didn’t see if she disconnected the phone call. She could have put it on speaker. Then when she finished talking to me, she picked it up again. She could have just been making another call.”
Ry had a bad feeling about all of it, and his neck tingled. Another hunch kicked him in the gut, and it seemed way too plausible. He needed to talk to Chrissy and the guys.
“What are you thinking,” Harmony asked.
“I think something else is going on here. I don’t know what, but I’m going to figure it out. Until then, just be careful, okay?
“Yup, I will. Does this mean I have spidey sense, too?” She asked and batted her eyelashes at him.
“Yes, it does, baby, most definitely.” Ry leaned down and rubbed his lips against hers until she parted for him. His tongue swept inside her mouth, making love to her mouth the way he’d eventually make love to every inch of her.
Moaning, Harmony dug her fingernails into his shoulders as she clung to him. When he finally released her, they were both breathing heavily.
“I love when you do that,” she admitted and ducked her head against his shoulder.
“I do too. It’s getting harder and harder to stop.”
“Maybe we should keep going then,” she said shyly.
“Don’t tempt me, it would be so easy to carry you to bed and not let you out until all the neighbors hear you scream my name.” Ry dreamed about taking her every night, and his morning showers had been more about relief from his constant erection than getting clean.
“Oh, wow.”
“Yes, it would definitely be wow. There will be no wow tonight, I’m afraid. I need to make some phone calls to see if we can figure out what’s going on. I also have some sad news.”
“Oh, no. What’s wrong?”
“Barb Ericson passed away the other day. Detective Nelson found out this afternoon.”
