“No way.”
“Yup, so next round of drinks is on you,” Chrissy teased.
“No problem,” Harmony replied, trying to wrap her brain around what she’d just learned.
“Anyway, her attorney was in cahoots with your sperm donor and told him about the will. Apparently, your father flipped out. Shortly after that, your mom disappeared. We now know that she was killed, but not whether it was an accident or on purpose.”
Harmony’s eyes filled with tears for the woman she barely remembered. There would never be a reunion, and she hadn’t deserted her. It was all on her father. “And no one knew or did anything about it?”
“Oh, people knew, they just kept their mouths shut. The lawyer and the sheriff helped him pull it off. That’s how we know a lot of this now. Sheriff Donovan agreed to testify against your father for a reduced sentence. That’s how the FBI found your mother’s body this morning. They’ll release her body to you after they complete the investigation. I’m so sorry, Harmony. I really wish I’d been able to find her alive.”
Harmony wished it too, but it wasn’t Chrissy’s fault. It was her father’s fault.
“The people in Norwalk, Iowa had quite the shock this morning when the FBI rolled in, I’m sure. They arrested not only Larry Witt, your mom’s attorney, but Sheriff Donovan too. Since your father was mayor, they’re really fucked now.”
“Oh, wow. I didn’t even think about that,” Harmony said, wondering how many people had known and did nothing to stop any of it.
“The only reason your old boss, Patrick Henniger, didn’t get arrested is because they won’t be able to prove he knew about the will. Or that the money should have been going to you after you turned twenty-one.”
Harmony nodded. “Is that everything?”
“Yes, well mostly. The FBI is still investigating, so some things can’t be discussed. I shouldn’t even know, probably. Oh, there is one more thing. You’ll be hearing from an attorney from Tanger and Witt soon about your inheritance. At least you won’t have to go back to that bank. Just think of all the options open to you now. You deserve it. That fucktard put you through hell.”
Harmony agreed, but it was still surreal. She’d been worried about going back to the bank and getting a new car. Now, none of that mattered. She could do like Ry suggested and figure out what made her happy.
“Thank you, Chrissy. I really appreciate that you found all of this out. Without you, my father would probably have gotten away with all of it.” She shuddered thinking about spending the rest of her life locked up in a mental institution.
“You’re most welcome. I’m glad I could help. It sucks, but now you can move on. That douchebag won’t ever bother you again.”
“Hopefully not. But what if they don’t convict him?”
“They will. There’s more than enough evidence. If they could prove he killed your mom deliberately, he could get the death penalty.”
“I can’t say I’d be sorry if it happened,” Josh said, and Ryan nodded in agreement.
“Me, either,” Ry said.
Harmony didn’t know what to think. She was sure she’d loved him at some point, but now all she could think about was that he’d shot Harry and wanted to lock her up. Maybe him being locked up would be enough.
“If I find out anything else I can share, I’ll let you know. But I need to get going. I’m probably going to disappear for a few weeks,” Chrissy said.
Harmony knew Ryan hated when she went on missions, but it was the same for Chrissy when Ryan went on missions.
“You need a guys’ night, Ryan, so you’re not sad when Chrissy’s away,” Harmony suggested.
Chrissy laughed. But Ryan nodded. “That might not be a bad idea, actually. Take care. If you need anything, let us know,” Ryan added as they headed for the door.
The apartment seemed almost too full while Chrissy shared her findings, but after they’d left, it seemed empty and too quiet. Even sitting snuggled between Ry and Whiskey, Harmony shivered.
Ry tipped up her chin, so she’d look at him. “It’ll be okay, sweetheart. Remember, you’re not alone. You have me and a whole new family who care about you. Just take it one day at a time.”
For the first time in her life, she really believed that everything would be okay.
The trust in Harmony’s eyes almost brought Ry to his knees.
“After all you’ve been through, your trust humbles me,” he murmured. His lips rubbed against hers, waiting for her to accept him. As they parted, his tongue swept inside and rubbed against hers, possessing her mouth the way he wanted to have all of her.
Needing more of her, Ry pulled her onto his lap and helped her straddle him, her knees on either side of his hips. He groaned as her core pressed against his throbbing cock, as it painfully pushed against his zipper. And still, it wasn’t enough. He needed to be inside her until he didn’t know where he ended, and she began.
