Harmony was practically bouncing up and down in the passenger seat. Her excitement was contagious, and Ry couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. Harmony had been waiting for this day for weeks, and yesterday the call came.
“Do you think he’ll be excited?” she asked again.
“You’ll know soon enough,” he replied as they drove across town.
“Oh my gosh, you’re such a brat.”
Ry grinned. He couldn’t believe how much she’d changed over the last two months. Harmony had finally blossomed into the woman she should have been. The changes hadn’t been easy for her, especially when she found out the truth about her mother’s disappearance.
“I’m driving as fast as I can. I promise. You see all this traffic, right?”
“Yes. I don’t mean to be a nag, but I can’t wait.”
“I know, sweetheart. I can’t either. Today is going to be a very special day,” Ry said. Looking over to see Harmony’s beautiful smile, it was weird not having to look through his dog. The truck seemed a lot larger without Whiskey shoved between them, but today they’d have an extra passenger, so Whiskey had to stay home.
Ry pulled into the parking lot, and Harmony cheered.
“Yay. We’re finally here.”
He went around the truck to open her door and help her out.
After stopping at the nurses' station, they went into his room.
“Hi Harry,” Harmony said.
He was sitting in a chair next to the bed. Harmony said he looked like he did when she’d first met him. Ry was just happy that he’d pulled through.
“Harmony, Ry, how are you? I’m so happy to see you.”
“We’re doing great, you’re the one recovering from the bullet wound.”
“Eh, the doctor said it didn’t hit anything major, and it’s helped me lose a few pounds,” he teased.
“That’s not true, and you know it. My stomach twists in knots when I think about how you looked lying on the floor. There was so much blood.”
“You need to let it go, sweetie. I’m fine now. And that guy who didn’t deserve to be your father is getting what’s coming to him. Right?”
“Yes, but I almost didn’t get the chance to thank you for saving me,” Harmony said as she took his hand and kneeled down next to him.
“I didn’t save you. I just took a step to the left at the right time. I think this fella here is the real hero.”
Ry grinned. He may have helped, but it was Harry who took a bullet for his woman, and he’d never forget the debt he owed him.
“Anyway, enough mushy stuff. It looks like I might get out next week. Want to help me find an apartment?”
“There’s been a slight change in plans, Harry. You’re getting released today, and we already found you a place to live,” Harmony said. Her smile lit her face with sunshine and filled his heart with happiness. Harry wasn’t the only one getting a surprise.
“Do you need help with your clothes?” Ry asked as Harmony unpacked the clothing they’d brought for him.
“I think I can get it. I better if they’re tossing me out on my butt,” Harry said with a grin. “You’ll have to step outside, young lady.”
“Yes, sir.” Harmony winked at Ry and stepped into the hallway.
“You’re lucky to have that girl, you’d better treat her right,” Harry said as he buttoned his shirt.
“I know just how lucky I am. Harmony stole my heart when she almost took out a wedding cake,” Ry said, grinning at the memory.
“I bet that’s a funny story.” Harry chuckled and pulled up his pants.
