I fist-bumped her just as food went flying across the mess hall. It hit a witch on the back of the head, and she turned around to glare. Everyone was looking down and trying to look innocent. Faust didn’t even move from his perch on the wall.

“If you want to waste food, I can make sure you end up in solitary eating bread and water. Don’t test me, assholes.”

The witches all shot Faust this grateful look like they thought he was on their side until he gave them this epic stink eye that made it pretty clear he just didn’t want to deal with any shit today.

The witches finally had time to notice Wren sitting with us. Wren’s spell must have still been in effect because I clearly heard them plan to shank her in the laundry room from here. Faust heard it too. He strode over to them and spread his palms on their table.

The witches might be spelled, but Faust wasn’t. I didn’t hear what he said to them, but every witch at the table visibly paled and shrank back. The bell rang for us to get to work, and the witches couldn’t get away from him fast enough.

Faust came over to our table before we could put our trays up. I knew he was mad at Wren. He must consider her competition. I knew what Hauser would have done if he found his mate in bed with another woman. Hauser would have sent Wren straight to the laundry room and let the witches deal with her.

Faust just stood there a minute, glaring at Wren.

“So, do you want to go to the laundry room and risk getting overpowered, or do you want me to move you to the mailroom with the strays? You made your alliance pretty clear with your table choice, but I don’t know all the subplots you’ve got going. I don’t know how, but I suspect that riot the other day was your doing.”

Wren just bat her eyelashes innocently.

“I want to go to the mailroom.”

“Of course, you do. Watch out for those two assholes, and don’t go down with them. Come with me, Rei.”

Faust knew about the black market. He was standing right there when the witches outed Dakarys and Rajack. If any other guard had heard about it, they would have taken the promotion for bringing it to the warden and getting it shut down.

Faust had said nothing . . . yet. I needed to make sure he didn’t because it was our ticket out.
