Wren just shrugged.
“Dakarys might not like him, but I trust Faust. He’ll see me sitting away from the witches and move me to the mailroom.”
“I wonder if I killed Brody.”
Wren grunted.
“First time?”
“Well, yeah. Hauser taught me to steal from the best, and I know how to fight and defend myself. We never really went over killing. He taught me to disable my opponent and run like hell.”
“Yeah, it’s always weird your first time.”
“It’s actually not. I regret nothing if he’s dead. He was trying to kill me. No one could hear it over the riot, but he wasn’t just using the button on the baton to charge it up. He was chanting something too. He was trying to kill me.”
Wren smacked my ass again before we stepped into the mess hall where other people could see us.
“I knew I was into you for a reason.”
Dakarys and Rajack were waiting with food. They must have known Wren was joining us because there was a plate for her too. She started mowing her way through the pile of sausages.
“There are definite perks to hanging out with you two assholes. Most of the sausage is gone by the time the witches get to breakfast. I’d kill someone for a side of bacon, but we never get that here.”
“The food here is much better than Scorchwood, but I will admit there are foods from home that I miss,” Dakarys said.
“You used to wax poetic about Egyptian food when we were eating the slop back in Scorchwood. You’re going to have to put out and cook for us when we get out of here.”
“Deal if you do the same, Rajack.”
“I make a mean roast pig,” Wren said.
I had to remember all three of them got arrested before microwaves. They had them in Silverhold. I’d seen people nuke noodles from the commissary. I was super attached to mine.
“I’m a horrible cook,” I announced. “I can make mac and cheese, though. Much better than the stuff they serve here.”
“Oh, shit. They’ve got some balls,” Dakarys said.
I followed his line of sight. The witches were spilling into the mess hall. They were beaten and bruised. There were fewer of them than there were before. I didn’t think any of them died, but some were probably in medical with Venus now.
They didn’t even look for Wren. The entire mess hall went silent, and everyone glared at them. They looked terrified but were trying not to show it. Faust was at his usual perch by the witch table, but there were more guards in here this time.
Someone plopped next to me, and I realized it was Whisper. She tried to steal one of Wren’s sausages and nearly got stabbed in the hand with a fork.
“Theyreekof fear,” Whisper laughed.
Dakarys and Rajack seemed surprised she was with us.
“What are you doing?” Rajack asked.
“A little show of support. Calm your tits. I’m trying to show the entire prison that the foxes are okay with Rei sitting with you, and Wren is off-limits. Most everyone wants Venus, but they don’t care who they take out along the way.”
“Okay, fine. You can have one of my sausages. Good idea,” Wren said.
“Why are you doing this for me?” I asked.
I wasn’t complaining. I just didn’t get it. Hauser always told me if anyone found out what I was, I’d be in danger. So far, I hadn’t been. Whisper could have very well wanted me dead, but she was still protecting me.
“I have a soft spot for strays, Rei. You walked into our cellblock with Faust halfway up your ass, and you still had your head high. I could admire that. The rest of the foxes agree with me. The rest of the prison might not know, butweknow what you did to Brody. Props, Rei,” Whisper said, holding out her fist.
