“I can’t believe you assholes are making me choose between freedom and revenge,” Wren pouted.
Rei just smirked.
“The best revenge against themisbreaking out. I’m guessing any witch who looks will recognize the potion to melt the door. Everyone who works here is going to look hard at the witches. Venus can get the mailroom, but everyone will look for contraband now. She won’t find out how Dakarys and Rajack are getting things in.
“Any respect Venus might have gained with the witches will waiver. Think about it. There was a way out of here, and Venus didn’t know it. You were Astrid’s right hand. I’d be willing to bet money they all think you and Astrid figured out the escape plan together. You took us instead of the rest of the witches because they killed Astrid. If Faust, the Aether Circle, or the eagles don’t kill her, the other witches will.”
Wren’s face broke into this evil grin.
“Oh, I like that version of this story. I’d kill anyone here to see the look on Venus’s face when the traitors she created turn on her. I’m in. Your plan needs another set of eyes if you didn’t think about what would happen when you’re gone. You bitches are lucky to have me.”
Honestly? Yeah, we needed Wren, and it was more than just the potion. She’d been here longer than the rest of us. We had a much better chance of pulling this off if she was with us. I wasn’t about to piss her off because Wren had a temper.
I held out my hand. Wren clasped forearms with me.
“Welcome to the team.”
“If you fuck this up, I’ll kill all three of you,” Wren promised.
The bell rang for us to get back for count. I had absolutely no doubts Wren would keep that promise if we got caught.
We just had to make damned sure we didn’t get caught. We wouldn’t. Wren was the missing ingredient we didn’t know we needed.
