“None of those three would have stuck their neck out for a new girl unless there were feelings involved. Maybe wolvescan share.”

I just scoffed. Rajack had totally lost his mind. I could see Skoll sharing his mate. He’d always been reasonable.

“Skoll and Faust aren’t even remotely the same. Skoll only killed one person. He killed the man who raped his sister. Anyone he killed in prison was just self-defense. Faust kills for fun!”

Wren raised her hand and cleared her throat.

“I’ve always seen through his mystique. Faust is like me. He’s not killing people because he likes it, and Silverhold is his hunting ground. It’s his primary job. Being a CO here is just a cover. Haven’t you noticed all the suspected Faust kills had been shitty people who would have raped or killed in here? If someone dies in here and it wasn’t gang-related, it was either Faust or me, and we needed it. I see way more than you fuckers do.”

“Faust kills inmates for money. That’s supposed to make it better? What the fuck, Wren? Did you know about this, Rei?” I demanded.

She said she was starting to care for him. Rei said she saw a different side of him. How could she see any good in him? I was serving a life sentence for passing meds to a hospital from the black market. I didn’t turn into a killer until I got to Scorchwood and had no choice. Faust did it for money. Was I the only one here with a problem with that?

“Yes, I did, but he doesn’t take every job, Dakarys. He declined when the Aether Circle approached him about me, and that was before he knew I was his mate. He has a process that involves a lot of research. He only takes jobs when it involves bad people.”

“You’re being a bit of a hypocrite, Dakarys,” Wren said. “You have no problem with me or my methods. You’re taking me with you when you break out. I landed in this shithole doing the exact same job Faust does. Before I got to know her, I totally would have accepted the Aether Circle’s money and killed Rei. I would have retired on a beach and not felt the slightest bit bad about it either. Faust turned them down because of his code, and I can tell you they would have offered enough money that he never had to work a single day in his life.”

“Yeah, Faust is a fucking Boy Scout,” I grumbled.

“Dakarys, stop,” Rajack said. “The fact is, we know nothing about the wolf. Wren understands him from a professional standpoint, and Rei has been alone with him in his office this countless times. Even you can admit, Faust has done nothing but keep Rei safe this entire time. It’s not just Rei who would be in danger if anyone found out about the mate thing. Faust would be transferred far away from this prison. Like it or not, we need him. He can get intel from the outside about the Aether Circle getting someone in here before we break out.”

I threw up my hands. Why was everyone Team Faust suddenly? I got what Wren was saying about his kills. He hadn’t technically killed anyone I liked in here. I could admit that it was extremely hypocritical to admire Wren’s skills and let her out into the general public again but judge Faust for the same thing.

Maybe I was just pissed about the whole mate thing.

“Fine! But I don’t think we should bring him in on our escape plans. And since Rei and Wren are the ones who trust the fucking wolf, if he joins us after we get out, you two are responsible for making sure he keeps his homicidal urges in check and doesn’t kill us in our sleep.”

Rei and Wren got in a promise, but we hardly had time to seal it. The blaring alarm that had been going off the entire time we were talking changed. That meant they got the riot under control, and people would be going back to their cells.

Rajack and I couldn’t be found in here. We needed to get to the mailroom to stash this key if they tossed cells after the riot. I really hoped no one got stabby during the fight. I wouldn’t be mad if Brody died. Technically, he was trying to kill Rei.

But I didn’t want anyone else to die in the riot we caused on purpose.
