“IknowBrody would have beaten Rei to death. Do you have a better idea for keeping his attention off Rei when he realizes his keys are gone?”
Rei just shrugged like none of this worried her at all. I saw her facing off with Brody in between face-punching inmates. She was so badass. She was the smallest person in this prison, but she stood her ground facing off against Brody like she knew she was going to beat his ass down. And she did without even laying a finger on him.
“The new tail means I can control electricity. He had the safety on the baton turned off. He meant to kill me with it. I let it get a full charge, then shocked him with his own weapon, and it exploded in the process. Faust checked, and he’s not dead, but that fucker might sleep through our escape.”
I guess our thief had a little killer in her too. The beauty in that was, Brody knew damned well he turned the safety on his baton off and would think it just backfired when he woke up. He couldn’t blame Rei for that, even if she tried to kill him.
“And I think I figured out how Kitsunes get tails. My birthday just happened when I got a new one, but I felt antsy way before that. I think it was the heist at the museum that started it. I started feeling weird after I got arrested. I thought it was just being in solitary for so long.
“Wren and I worked together to stick it to the witches, and it caused a prison riot. I tried to kill Brody, and I stole his keys. I’ve got that weird tingly feeling again, but this time, I recognize it. I might sprout another tail soon.”
Wren and Rajack looked like they were utterly in love with the idea. I would admit having a super-powered Kitsune on our side was a good idea, and it meant better defense against all the witches that wanted to kill her. But did anyone but me remember what happened the last time a new tail magically appeared?
“Rei, be careful. Just make sure you’re in the mailroom and in the blind spot when it comes out.”
Rei walked over and wrapped her arms around my waist. I would not say no to Kitsune hugs, but it felt strange having someone this small try to comfort me, even if she could electrocute my ass with just a thought. This was nice, and I clearly wasn’t getting any kisses from her since Wren barged in. I was still mad about that. I would have at least liked a chance. I glared at that girlfriend-stealing witch over Rei’s head.
“I can control it. It feels weird, but I only shifted because I knew I was safe with you, and the cameras couldn’t see me. Stop pouting and glaring at Wren. That goes for you too, Rajack.”
“Rei, I—”
She didn’t let me finish. I guess I was getting kisses too. Rei yanked me down and claimed my mouth. I’d never kissed a demon before, but it had its perks. Her sharp little fox teeth grazed my lower lip as she pulled away and smiled at me.
She let me go and danced over to Rajack. He got a kiss too. I guess Wren realized what we didn’t when she told us to share. Rei wasn’t a fox shifter. She didn’t have just one mate out there. She had more than one tail. I guess it made sense she was into more than just one person.
Rei broke away from Rajack. She put her hands on her hips and glared at us.
“Does that answer your question? Can we stop with the pouting and glaring at Wren now?”
Rajack and I exchanged a glance. We’d been cellmates for as long as I could remember. We watched each other’s backs in both prisons we’d been in. The only reason we survived Scorchwood with inmates killing each other and the Warden experimenting on inmates was because we were friends. We built something special here with the black market in Silverhold.
We were of different species and from different parts of the world. We weren’t even the same kind of criminal. We still had a lot in common. I considered Rajack my brother, and I knew he felt the same.
It made sense we fell for the same girl. I had no problem sharing Rei with Rajack. The jury was still out on Wren, who seemed to find this entire thing hilarious. Rei shot her this look like she was in on the joke.
“I’m sorry. Why is this funny?” Rajack demanded.
“You kissed them,” Wren howled. “You might as well let them know what they are in for. He willnotlike this arrangement.”
Wait a minute. There was another he in this equation? How? Rei spent all her time with us. I got the connection with the three people in this cell. Who else was there? Rei didn’t look like she wanted to tell us either.
“What’s going on, Rei?”
“Faust thinks I’m his mate. I see a different side to him. I know him better than you do. I care for him too.”
What. the. fuck. I was okay with Rajack, and I could get used to Wren. But fucking Faust? He would kill all of us in our sleep. Especially if he was feeling the mate pull. Wolves didn’t share. A wolf in Scorchwood ripped a vampire’s throat out because he stole an orange off his tray. If wolves didn’t even like sharing food, Faust was definitely going to slit our throats when it came to sharing Rei.
“He doesn’t know about our little breakout plan, does he?”
Rei shook her head.
“No. He called Hauser before I knew the truth. He let me call Hauser from his cell phone. Hauser knows about it, and he thinks we have a better chance of success if we bring Faust in. I can’t do that. If we get caught, it’ll ruin his life. I was going to call him when we were far away. After that, it would be up to him if he forgave me.”
If?She was his fucking mate. She could have murdered every single soul in this prison on her way out, and he would have forgiven her. It probably would have turned him on. That wolf wasn’t right in the head. Rajack didn’t seem nearly as worried about this as I was.
“Remember Skoll from Scorchwood? He disappeared with several inmates right around the time things crumbled. The news stories we read after mentioned a wolf that helped expose things. All of that went down when that new girl showed up that nearly set Jasmine on fire several times. Amduscias and Roman were all up her ass too.
“They all disappeared at the same time. The papers mentioned a wolf, a demon, a vampire, and some long lost Fae princess. Skoll, Roman, and Amduscias rarely got involved with prison drama unless someone came for one of them.
