Chapter 28

Rei

O

ne would have thought after the riot, they would have locked us in with the lights on again and brought us brown bags with baloney sandwiches like when they found Astrid. The lights cut out, and the bell rang for count like the entire mess hall hadn’t come together to kill the witches the day before.

It was hard, but I dragged my ass out of bed before Faust got to my cell. I slept snuggled up with Wren again, but I didn’t want to hurt Faust. I also didn’t want Faust to eat Wren. He was angry when he found us the first time, but I could also tell I hurt him. I could sense his wolf, which was wholly odd, and it felt like someone kicked a puppy, and now it was snapping back.

Faust looked a little surprised to see me at my cell door for count. I looked like a hot mess. My prison-issued pajamas were crooked, and my hair was everywhere. I really didn’t want him to see me like this, but I wanted him to find me in bed with Wren again even less.

He only met my eyes briefly before he started ignoring me to do his count. Faust did his thing with his clicker and moved to walk out. He turned to address us.

“I don’t want a repeat of yesterday. No one makes a move on the witches. I mean it,” he growled, glaring at Whisper.

Whisper pulled off looking totally innocent, but I knew she was up to something. I got next to her in line to the showers.

“I know you are up to something.”

“We’re playing it smart. I overheard several other gangs on the way back to our cells. No one wants to kill every witch in Silverhold. We’re notthatbad in here. Everyone is pooling their commissary shit and some desirable items from the black market. Venus has a nice little bounty on her head. The foxes intend to win. We’re going to finish the job this time.”

I fell back in line with Wren.

“Is that good enough for you?”

Wren smacked me on the ass.

“The dumber ones who were totally on board with betraying Astrid will go down with her. I don’t need them all dead either.”

“I’m glad you can be rational about your murder plans.”

“I’m always rational when I’m planning to kill someone.”

I poked her in the side to tickle her. Wren jumped and smacked my hand away. I couldn’t help laughing. Wren went a little nuts with her revenge plans against the witches, but I had to admit, there was some beauty in her plans.

I got through my shower with minimal comments from Whisper about my tits. Wren kept checking me out, and I was super turned on watching her soap up her lithe body. Witches weren’t usually in the toned shape Wren was. Most of them relied on their magic. I had a feeling Wren kept her body like that way before she got arrested and her magic was taken away. She would have to for her job.

I leaned over to Wren as I turned the water off and grabbed my towel.

“Whisper is so focused on my boobs. She hasn’t even noticed yours,” I whispered.

Wren laughed.

“Oh, she noticed. She’s just not dumb enough to say anything to me like she does to you. If she were smart, she’d stop commenting on yours in front of me because I can be a jealous bitch. I’m totally fine with your little harem, but Whisper isn’t one of us. She needs to lay off.”

“Whisper is harmless.”

“Stop right there, Rei. She might be friendly with you, and she’s keeping your secret, but that doesn’t make her harmless. You might not be a fox shifter, but you share one thing in common. Foxes are cunning and tricky. Many people in the supernatural world look down on them, but I’d lay odds Whisper wins that bounty and becomes a very wealthy fox in prison.”

“Won’t she end up in solitary and not be able to use her haul?”

“Shit, girl. You really haven’t spent a lot of time around actual fox shifters. Not a single fox is going to go down for it.”

“Where are you sitting today? With the witches or us?”

“I’m publicly aligning with the outcasts. No one would blame me after what they heard, and it would make sense given how close I was with Astrid. The other witches will think I’m shunning them, but they have other things to worry about.”

“What about work duty?”
