And just like that, my excitement over having Lux by my side still was overshadowed by the reminder that even if I’d have my best friend here, it was still a life of confinement away from my mates and Morgan.
“Hello, Kira,” Psyche greeted me, stepping closer and pulling me down into a swift hug, surprising me. She smelled of summer. Honeysuckle and sunshine. As my own arms wrapped around her, I jumped in alarm as I felt feathers brushing against my hands.
Were those wings tucked into her back?
“I’m so sorry,” I rushed to apologize for touching them. For some reason, in my head that was a big no-no. It just seemed so intimate to touch them.
“Oh, honey, it’s okay,” she quickly rebutted, reaching out a hand to my forearm. “I honestly still forget I have them. It’s odd after living a human life and also one as a Goddess now.”
Cue the second jaw drop since coming here.
“A human? You were a human?” I asked, internally face-palming over asking the same question twice, but I was just baffled by that information.
Selene quickly intervened, motioning towards the couches, “A story for another day, young one. For now we must have Psyche use her time here for what we need. There is plenty of time to learn the history of the Gods and Goddesses after.”
Ah, another bleak reminder that I was effectively imprisoned here for centuries to come.
Lux was oddly quiet despite all of this crazy information.
Are you okay?
Just feeling anxious.
It’ll be okay. I promise.
I love you, Kira.
I love you too, Lux.
“So,” Psyche started, clapping her hands together excitedly as soon as we were settled on the couch, with her positioned between Selene and I in the corner of the sectional. “How can I be of assistance?”
Thankfully, Selene quickly caught her up, for I was too tongue-tied to explain it all, and it absolutely wouldn’t have been as proficient and eloquent.
After understanding, Psyche nodded and hummed to herself, eyes glittering with intrigue as they raked over me. “May I touch you? I’d like to get a feel for the connection of the two souls to see if this is possible without harming either.”
As I nodded, she shuffled closer and explained as she laid her hand at my temple and closed her eyes. “Sometimes souls are inseparable. To remove one would be to kill both.”
I flinched at that option.
A probing in the center of my chest began as she continued. “Sometimes one soul has simply hitched a ride, so to speak, and they can be easily extracted.”
I’d prefer that option.
Same.
Locking eyes with Selene, she smiled her encouragement.
“However, with shifters it is a bit more complicated as you already have two inseparable souls entwined with the wolf and human as one.”
Hesitantly, I asked, “Well, yeah. Isn’t that what Lux is? My wolf?”
The uncomfortable probing continued for a bit longer until Psyche removed her hand from my temple and sat back. “I cannot say that I have seen your situation before, but I do feel confident that we can remove Lux from you without danger to either of you.”
Before I could smile my relief, Selene asked, “What is the situation?”
Psyche’s head tilted slightly as her eyes ran the length of me. “Kira has both situations occurring simultaneously. Think of it as three souls in one body. The typical connection of her soul to her wolf’s is there and perfectly intact for Kira.”
Wait, what?
