Two men emerged from the deep shadows of the woods that surrounded Camelia’s estate. One of them was a man with dark eyes and shoulder-length curly hair. He was missing an arm. The second one was very tall and covered in thick muscle. His blond hair was slicked back, and his face was covered by a thick beard. His eyes were steely blue as they settled on mine.
“This is the girl?” he asked.
I opened my mouth to speak, but I couldn’t.
Calvin approached the two of them. “King, Jasper. I’m glad you guys could make it.”
I let out a sigh of relief. It was his two friends he had mentioned were joining us for this fight. Why? I didn’t know. I never thought to ask. Not that asking questions worked out well for me.
Calvin turned toward me. “Allison, this is King.”
He gestured toward the man with the missing arm.
“And this is Jasper,” he said, gesturing to the blond.
I smiled and waved, shaking out the magic that still rested in my hand.
“This is Allison,” Calvin said, gesturing to me.
“How do they know about me?” I asked.
Calvin smiled. “I told them about you.”
I tried to force back the smile, but it was no use. I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and let the smile cut free.
“Are we done with the pleasantries?” Milo asked, soiling the moment. As usual.
“Yes,” Calvin said. He glared at Milo. I rolled my eyes and hoped beyond reason that they didn’t start fighting again.
“Let’s do this,” Milo said and nodded to me once before heading inside. There was something in his eyes that set me on edge. Something that had me considering everything Calvin had said to him earlier during their fight.
I sucked in a breath. Words failed me.
“No time like the present,” Jasper said and shifted into a giant bear.
King clapped Calvin on the shoulder and gave him a nod before shifting into a three-legged lion.
I gasped.
Calvin stood back and took my hands into his, pulling my attention to him. He stared deep into my eyes. “Please keep your eyes open. And be careful.”
“I will,” I said. “You do the same.”
He smirked and settled his attention on Aidan. He gave him a nod.
Calvin released my hands and shifted into his white wolf. He took the lead of his two friends, and they headed to the points Milo had previously covered.
I let out a deep breath and faced Aidan. “You ready for this?”
He chuckled. “Damned indeed.”
I shook my head as he leaned in and left a peck on my cheek.
“Be safe,” I said.
“Where is the fun in that?” he asked as he stepped forward, heading for his spot. He shifted into his rust-colored bear and hobbled off gleefully.
I stared at the front of the massive estate as Aidan blended into the shadows. The time Had come for me to help the men. I would be home soon too, with luck. God, I missed my bed.
