I walked off without another word. If it was one thing I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, it was I did nothing but buy myself a little time. That was it. My only option was to head into town and find Gemma before Tabitha did. Then I was going to do what I should have done before and give her a chance to explain, listen, and tell her what I should have before she left.

All before Tabitha did. Because the second I was out of sight, she would continue to stalk Gemma. Maybe even follow me to town.

One thing was for certain, she wouldn’t dare make a scene in front of a bunch of humans.

Then again, she was one not to be underestimated.

GEMMA

The food I had ordered was a bust. The whole freaking day was a bust, and the weekend wasn’t shaping up to be any better either.

Not only that, but after I had calmed down, I decided to eat the food I had ordered. Within fifteen minutes of eating, everything came right back up. It was such a waste of great Italian food. And it was my favorite dish. Chicken Alfredo.

Morning sickness was a bitch. I wouldn’t recommend it in a thousand years to my worst enemies. Modern medicine needed to catch up with the times and have a remedy for it. Why did they call it morning sickness anyway? For me, it was all day long. Not just in the morning.

Once I had cleaned up and changed my clothes–which was a long story as to why, of which I would keep the details to myself–I sat in the room bored out of my mind. Staring at the walls of the hotel room was slowly driving me insane. And it was a dangerous moment for me because I was entertaining the idea of going back to Weylan’s and making him talk to me about the trouble we had gotten ourselves into.

Maybe I should invite him to a doctor’s visit. Or pen him down to a decision right then and there. Either be involved or not. Either way, I needed to know.

Those were all horrible decisions. Ones I really couldn’t afford to take. The risk involved in them was more than I was willing to handle.

So, I went to my old faithful. I decided to try window shopping again. It usually helped to take my mind off of things that were weighing on me, and I thought it would be good for me to take some time away from the situation. Maybe I could find some type of food that wouldn’t come right back up. Or bump into someone who just might have the answers I was seeking.

Wishful thinking, for sure. But I wanted to at least try. I was going to waste away into nothing if I didn’t figure out how to keep food down. And if at first I didn’t succeed, I needed to try, trying again.

I was getting ahead of myself. A little distance was all I needed.

One step at a time.

I walked down the street from the motel room and was staring at a shop’s storefront, looking at some turquoise trinkets.

“Gemma,” he said.

Weylan’s voice startled me. I jumped and closed my hand over my chest as my heart instantly started to race. I spun around and settled my eyes on the dangerous light brown orbs belonging to none other than Weylan. My shocked expression was exchanged for a glare. I had no idea what he was doing in town or why he startled me in the way he had. He had made his position crystal clear. Never mind the fact that I wasn’t expecting to see him ever again.

“What do you want?” I asked and exchanged my shocked expression for a glare.

He sighed. His eyes shifted to the ground. “I understand why I would be the last person you want to have anything to do with right now.”

His voice was reserved. Almost as though he hated how things went between us. Plus my tone was less than encouraging.

His reaction stung, and I bit my lip. I normally didn’t take a harsh tone with people. Even people who deserved it. And he especially deserved it after the way he treated me earlier. Though there wasn’t much of a history between us to go off of. I mean, he did knock me up, but there was a whole lot behind that story. And it wasn’t exactly what anyone would expect to learn when it came down to it.

Then again, maybe not.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “Must be the hormones.”

Sore subject, but not far from the truth.

He stiffened a little. Only a little. The whole motion was minuscule in measure and was barely detectable. But I was staring at him and caught the movement. I rolled my eyes and quickly came up with an exit from this awkward exchange. He relaxed and nodded, sliding his hands into the front pockets of his jeans.

“Allow me to try this again,” I said.

He nodded.

“I wasn’t expecting to see you. What brings you into town?” I asked.
