A couple of hours later, the SOTF showed up, finally to collect Tabitha. I should have made the call a long time ago. When Tabitha first showed signs of not giving up. This time, however, she wouldn’t be coming back.

At least, not for some time.

The head detective, a tall, plump woman with long, fire-red hair, stepped inside and narrowed her gaze on Tabitha, sitting in a chair from my kitchen table, tied up and taped to it with duct tape.

“Good evening,” she said. “My name is Savannah White. I’m a detective with the Shifter Outlier Task Force.”

Tabitha growled.

She glanced at Tabitha as she pulled a card out and handed it to me.

“Thank you, Detective,” I said. “I’m Weylan. I made the call.”

She nodded and pulled out her notebook. Once she flipped through a few pages, she pulled out a pen. “I take it the growly one, here, is the one you called about?”

“Yes,” I said. “She has been causing problems for me and my mate.”

Detective White briefly glanced at Gemma and nodded. “Why don’t you tell me what happened.”

I dug into my story as another detective, stepped inside. “Miss, do you mind coming with me?”

Gemma glanced at me. I nodded. She sighed and set her cup down on the coffee table and stood up from the seat. She followed the other man into the kitchen.

“That is my partner, Jacob Abadi. He will be getting a statement from your mate. She will be safe, I promise you.

I nodded. “Right. Well, this is Tabitha. She and I used to mess around.”

“You messed around with a mountain lion?” she asked.

“Does that really matter?” I asked.

She shrugged. “I find it unusual for shifters to fornicate outside of their species, that’s all.”

“Well, there is probably a good reason for it. I don’t have a pack so I wouldn’t know,” I said.

“You don’t?” she asked as shock filled her expression.

“Can we just move on please?” I asked.

“It might be for the best. I’ll be here all night long otherwise,” she said.

“I broke things off with her months ago, but she keeps coming back around and threatening my mate. This time, she was going to kill her. I shifted, we duked it out, and she broke her back against a tree trunk. I called you and then carried her back here and tied her up.”

“You do realize that is unlawful detainment, right?” she asked.

“What would you have done if she promised she would never stop until your mate was dead?” I asked.

“I wouldn’t know. I’m not a shifter.” She met my eyes with her deep browns.

It was my turn to be shocked. “Really?”

“Nope. But I am a witch, so that qualified me for my job if that was your next question,” she said and huffed.

“It really wasn’t, but thank you for the information,” I said.

“You’re welcome. Now, when your mate is back out here, I’m going to ask you to go into a different room or stand outside so we can question Tabitha,” she said.

“You’re not just going to arrest her?” I asked.
