“What rumor?” Quinn asked him, then shot a look over her shoulder to make sure Luke wasn’t anywhere nearby.

“About some accidents happening that maybe weren’t accidents at the Harper farm?” Nash added.

Why she was surprised he knew that, she had no idea. Nothing in this town was a secret.

She nodded.

“I was going to see your father about it. I wanted to discuss a guy that called by to see if I would sell my land.”

That dragged her thoughts from Luke.

“Who?”

He gave the name of the same guy who had approached the Harpers.

“That’s the name on the card we have at home,” Quinn said. “He’s tried to buy our land twice now.”

“My land borders yours at the rear. You could get access to it from mine.” Nash’s eyes were locked on Quinn’s now.

“Wow, okay. I’ll tell Dad.”

“I’ll come over and talk to him tomorrow.”

“Thanks, Nash. I’ll tell Dad.” She left them and pulled out a candy bar. Ripping open the wrapper, she walked on while eating and looking for her parents.

“Hi, Quinn. You seen Luke?”

Joe Trainer was standing outside his bar.

“A-A while ago. Not sure where he is now.” She couldn’t look Joe in the eyes.

“You got a minute?”

“I’m just looking for Mom and Dad.”

“It’ll just take a minute.”

She nodded. He grabbed her arm and moved her to the right, away from the front door.

“Do you care about my brother, Quinn?”

The eyes looking down at her were so like Luke’s.

“Um, why are you asking me that?”

“Because I’ve never seen him look at any woman like he does you.”

“Joe—”

“If you care about him, then fight for him.”

“He doesn’t want me to fight for him. He wants to be friends.” She went for honesty. “And he’s right. I can’t commit to anything else right now either, even if he wanted to.”

But I want to.

Joe ran a hand through his hair. “He’s scared, Quinn. Luke doesn’t collect people to care about. He has the ones in his life he knows and trusts, but he doesn’t risk it with others, and especially not a woman.”

“He said that.”
