I chuckle as I disconnect the call. I’m not his boss, although I did get him his job. Javier is great at what he does. He’s the IT Director now, after starting as a Help Desk Technician.
After my short drive to the hospital, I walk into his office and sit beside him. He’s doing something, so I wait.
“I have a video for you to watch and then you need to explain.”
It starts when I see the number six outside of a door, on-call room six. I wait.
Stephanie approaches the door and looks around her, left to right, right to left several times. She looks like she’s up to no good. Then she goes into the room and closes the door behind her. He fast forwards, “Fifteen minutes,” he says.
Mercy comes in.
“I’ve seen enough. Don’t make me watch this.”
He pauses the screen.
“What the hell happened? Stephanie was fired and I heard nurses talking today saying you’re available again.”
“I am not fucking available. She climbed into my bed, I was sleeping, Mercy came in and of course believed the worst. The end.”
“Why was Stephanie fired?”
“Sexual Harassment.”
“Now what?” He asks, his hands folded on his lap.
“Nothing.”
He raises an eyebrow, “This girl means everything to you. I can get the paperwork for you to show that Stephanie was fired.”
“There’s no point. Mercy saw me in bed with a naked woman. We can’t ever move on from that.”
I stand and go to leave, very done with this conversation. “Thanks for caring, man. I need to get to rounds.”
He sighs, “Alright, boss.”
Mercy
I need to check in with Maria at the hospital to see if I can return to work part-time. Everything with Liam is a mess, and all this free time is driving me insane. I didn’t want Ivy to go to school today because I couldn’t bear to be alone with my never-ending thoughts.
I’m sitting on the couch flipping through the options on Netflix when my phone starts ringing.
“Hello,” I answer.
“Mercy Madison, please.”
“Speaking.”
I lay back on the couch in what used to be our spot as I listened to the man on the phone.
“This is Javier from IT at PCH.”
“Okay?” I respond in a questioning manner.
“Can you come see me today? The earlier the better?”
I frown at the phone, “You do realize I don’t work there anymore, right?”
“Can you come in?” He asks.
