I hear him yell out my name as I hang the phone up. I can’t lose my home and that’s all I can think about. My mind is running through every bad scenario it can think of right now.
I look down at the time only to realize it's only seven in the morning. The lawyer’s office doesn’t open until after nine. I have to be at work at ten and there is no way I will be able to get off before five. Maybe…I could give my shift away for tomorrow, but I hate to miss my tips. I need every dime right now.
Wandering through the house in my gown, I find myself outside sitting on the steps of the porch looking around, wondering how I would function anywhere else. Seeing Brutus out in the field only brings tears to my eyes. My life is seriously screwed up right now and part of it I brought on myself.
Ok, Jenna, get up… there is nothing you can do about this today. Get the wood in, feed the animals, and get to work. Call the lawyer right before the doors open, get an appointment for tomorrow, and then plan accordingly. Nothing like talking to yourself.
So that’s what I do and in that order. It takes me three tries, but I finally get through to the lawyer for a nine o’clock appointment the next day. Then I switch my morning shift out for an evening one.
My phone buzzes off and on all day, but I simply don’t have it in me to hear any and all the excuses… or theI’m sorryonce again.
My way of life is way more important than Dage at the moment… and when you think about it… that’s just sad.
We are two continents separated by a huge body of water that no matter how we shift or flow, we will never be one. It’s just like me to get hooked on a man completely out of my league. The day simply drags, and I have had to force a smile at every table. All I want to do is go home and curl up with my favorite blanket, maybe even read a book… anything to get my mind to calm right now.
I had just cashed out and was heading to the back when someone grabs my arm. I immediately think that it's Dage and when I turn to look around, I wish that it were. It is Roy the destroyer.
“Sweet thing, I see you got your car fixed, it’s a shame what happened to it the other night.”
“Take your fucking hands off me, and yeah, you should know all about my car. I can’t prove it, but we both know you are the one who did that to her.”
“Now pretty thing, that’s a big accusation. I’m innocent, just happened to be leaving the parking lot when I saw you walking away from her.”
“Yeah, did leaving the parking lot include you trying to take me out as you just about drove your truck right into the passenger side of the damn car I was in?”
“I think you and me just got off to a bad start, darling. We should start over. I would make you one Hell of a man. That city boy you was mooning over don’t know how to take care of a fine piece of ass like you.”
“Do you honestly hear the words coming out of your mouth? I mean you trashed my car and damn near ran me over and you think I’m going to go out with you! Are you deranged?”
I can see his temper is about to get the best of him and I step back away as far as I can. “You need to go find another victim for your inner demon. I’m not interested in you or any other man at the moment. Please, leave me and my things alone.”
Alecia walks up to me and wraps her arm around my waist kissing me on the cheek. “You ready to head home, baby girl? I got some dirty plans for us this evening.”
His eyes get big, and you can tell this immediately makes him uneasy. “Yeah, sweet cheeks, as soon as I get rid of this guy.”
His face only gets redder when Alecia acts like she is going to lick the side of my face. I have to bite my lip to keep from laughing. He struts off saying, “What a waste.”
We watch him until he storms out the front door, and then we both crack up laughing like two little kids that just pulled one over on their parents.
“Man, do I owe you for that save, Alecia.”
“I knew by the way he was acting that he was the asshole who did that to your car. Guys like that simply don’t get the hint, the more you would have said no the more he would have pushed so I figured it was worth a try.”
“God, the look on his face when you acted like you was going to lick me was fricken’ priceless.”
“It could have backfired, he could have said ‘I’ll take you both,’ but normally guys who are as violent as he is, they can’t take the competition. So, my new girlfriend wanna go get some dinner? My man is out of town for the next few days and the house is too quiet.”
“Sounds good to me. I don’t have any plans for the evening.”
“You seemed off today, not your normal bubbly self. You and Playboy already on the outs?”
“It’s him and everything else honestly. I need a break from reality for a few hours.”
“I can see margaritas in our future, and a male bitch session coming right up.”
“Alecia, I believe you are just what the doctor ordered this evening.”
“Baby girl, I just put on the performance of a lifetime a few minutes ago, we need to celebrate.”
