But they’re at the front of my mind, and I'm sure they’re on her mind as well.
As she talks, I can't help but watch her lips and wonder if they taste the same as the last time we were here. They pull me in without my knowledge because I'm closer than I realized when she lets out a little gasp and then leans into me.
Our lips meet and I swear I hear angels singing behind us. It's a perfect moment. This girl I've thought about so much and was my sole focus on my deployments. The one I will never forget is here with me in one of our favorite spots.
I never would have thought that possible a year ago, or hell, even six months ago.
I cup the back of her neck and hold her to me as I slowly lay her down on the blanket. I never break the contact between my lips and hers.
"You still taste the same," I whisper against her lips.
She smiles and continues to kiss me as I brace myself over her. Her body still fit against mine like she was made for me.
"I always loved it when you caged me in like this," she says.
I pull back enough to frame her face with my hands and lock my gaze with hers.
"I'll make it a point to do it more often." I smile before leaning in to kiss her again.
I taste her like this might be the last time I get the chance. I didn't know the last time I kissed her would be the last all those years ago, so I plan to cherish each kiss I get now.
Her lips are soft and taste like the vanilla ChapStick she always uses. She wraps her arms around my neck and runs her hands through my hair, knocking my hat off.
Just having her hands on me is enough to make me hard, and there’s no way to hide my length digging into her leg.
When she rubs against it, I moan because it feels so good and I want to relieve it more than anything. But I'm not letting us go there just yet. I don't want to move that fast.
So, I pull back and place a soft kiss on her forehead before sitting up. "We have plenty of time, sweetheart. Let's not rush it."
Sky snuggles into my side and rests her head on my shoulder as we stare across the field like we've done so many times before.
Chapter 15
Sky
I have a date.
It's been well over a year since I’ve been on a date, and that one was to make my parents happy. I didn't want to be there, and I wasn't anywhere near as nervous as I am now for my date with Dash?
Not just any date, though. This is our date at the diner. It’s not a fancy place, but I know exactly what it means. It will put us out there for everyone to see. The whole town will be talking about it, which means my parents will find out. It also means that this man who has kept himself locked away on his ranch is willing to push himself out of his comfort zone to go some place he knows I like.
I know Jenna is working tonight, and I hope having a familiar face there will make him a little more comfortable. Jenna told Austin we’ll be there, so I'm sure Austin will be there too. And if I know Walker Lake like I think I do, before we finish our meal, half the town will be in the diner to see Dash.
There's a knock on my door, and I smile. Ever the gentleman, picking me up for a date. I open the door and my mouth goes dry. Dash looks so handsome in dark jeans, a button-down shirt, a cowboy hat, and boots. This man looks like sin walking, and I am here for whatever ride he’s willing to take me on.
"You look beautiful," he says, running his eyes over me.
"You clean up pretty well yourself, cowboy." I finally met his eyes and smile.
He takes my hand and leads me down the stairs and across the front yard to his truck, where he opens the door and helps me inside. He waits until I’ve buckled up before closing the door and making his way over to his side of the truck.
Just like that, it's like no time has passed between us. He drives, I control the radio, and the conversation is easy and fun. It isn't until we park his truck in the town square that reality sinks in.
"We can grab some food to go and eat by the lake, just the two of us," I suggest, offering him an out.
"You deserve so much better than that. I can handle this." He smiles and takes a deep breath before stepping out of the truck.
He opens my door, holding his hand out for me to take and helping me down. He doesn't drop my hand as we head inside. Almost like it’s been choreographed, all eyes shift to us as we step inside, and the diner goes deadly quiet.
