“I don’t blame you. You guys were always the first to go in.”
Daniel nodded. “Yes. Unfortunately, I lost a lot of friends.”
“I’m sorry, Daniel,” Janessa said.
“It’s part of any war, honey.”
Nick held a hand out when they got to the sheriff’s car. “It was nice to meet you. We’ll have to go for beers sometime and swap stories.”
Daniel chuckled. “Sounds good. Bye, guys. Good luck with this one, man.”
Janessa gasped, and Nick laughed. “Thanks, I’ll need it.”
Janessa narrowed her eyes at Nick. “Wewilldiscuss this later.”
“I look forward to it.”
Nick and Janessa watched Daniel leave. He steered her toward his truck. “Do you feel better about things?”
“Yes. I don’t think I’ll ever have to deal with Henry anymore. Daniel knows I have you, so we’ll just be friends, and Daniel will take care of Trevor for us. It’s a huge weight off my shoulders.”
“Good. Will you open doors for me?”
“I can take something.”
Nick shook his head. “No, you won’t. Everything’s too heavy.”
She crossed her arms over her chest. “Come on. I can lift a bag of clothes.”
He set one of his duffle bags on the ground. “Try to lift that.”
He almost grinned when she looked cocky. Her smug smile fell quickly when she had to put all her body into moving it a few inches.
She stood up and scowled at him. “Are clothes the only thing in there? There aren’t bricks or something?”
He chuckled. “Yes, Baby. It’s just clothes. You can check when we get up to your room.”
“Our room,” she corrected him.
Nick smiled. “Our room.” Damn, he loved the sound of that.
Chapter Sixteen
Janessa watched him lift the duffle bag she could hardly move with one hand and grab a box of books with his other.
She could tell he was trying not to laugh when she started cursing under her breath. But it pissed her off how easily he was handling his stuff. She held the back door open and let him by before walking behind him up the steps. The sight of his tight ass made her feel better, and she smiled. He set things on the floor.
“I haven’t had my kiss yet,” he said.
She gasped when he yanked her into his arms, lifted her chin, and kissed her. She clung to his shoulders. The air around them sizzled, she thought, when he lifted his head.
“Damn, woman. As much as I want to strip you, we have things to get done. So do you know what that means?”
She shook her head. “No, what?”
“I’ll have to torment you twice tonight.”
Her mouth turned down. “That doesn’t sound very fun to me.”
